Re the names of shops
Nov 15 2007, 9:59 AM EST I recall so many shops perhaps I would become a bore or a hogger of this thread jings nowI have mentioned the Grain which was situated on that strip of springburn rd near to the pawn shop & the post office & the marvellous icecream cafe was further along beside the number 37 bus stop there were stacks of stores on both sides, some i recall are as follows............on the opposite side there were 2 yello painted shops owned by same family called Camerons hardwares, then there was a wee shop in between them which was called Mcqueens where us weans got something out of the penny tray before school started,I believe the Donnelly family owned a funeral parlour on the side of a cameron shop as I always thought it strange that the massive contrasts of 2 yellow shops then this demure brown & black shop as I thought at the time untill there was funeral walks & cars leaving from it regularly there was also another funeral shop by Donnellys up facing the springburn train station too.I recallcurleys & maseys,Galbraiths came along facing them as did woolworths too so curleys & masseys were struggling to stay afloat back in the days wherein one would carry leather message bags to do shopping not a plastic bag in sight always paper tissue papers wrappings & string for hoseiry shop nearby to curleys think it was called Hoseys???[oops sorry made post too long try too shorten in future sorry folks it's a bad habit of mines. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. RE: Re the names of shops
Nov 15 2007, 1:04 PM EST Linda if you go to the navigation panel and click on 'shop locations 1960s' you will se two pencil maps covering both sides of Springburn Road from the Balgrayhill to Charleston Street. Its a bit hard to read but they were compiled by Eddie Mccafferty who says late sicties. Have a look and see if it stirs any memories. One of the amazing things is that the shops stayed in the locations in many cases for thirty years (Sellyns etc) You are correct about Hoey's being along from Curley's. Again, if you check the Navigation pane and click on photos of Old Springburn the pics of the Orange Walk ypu will see a liitle bit of Curleys in the shot. Im wondering if there was another Curleys further up Springburn Road? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Re the names of shops
Jan 5 2008, 10:49 AM EST Did Lizzie MacFarlane have two shops? I can remember the one on Springburn Road opposite McNees chemist. I can remember her as though it was yesterday, can almost hear her voice. What a character she was. I always got my sand-shoes from there about a shilling a pair, my mother always bought her blinds from there, remember the paper ones? Always had new blinds for the New Year. When Lizzie went up thon ladder, you never knew what she'd come down with. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
