In my old primary school named Elmvale as a school cleaner to earn quick finances alonside of another 2 jobs elsewhere,I believe we at some time or another can end up working in or around the places we started off in,I saw being a cleaner for a few months in my old primary school as a time for reflection & reminicing before I left the country for Australia,I saw it was a useful stepping stone emotionaly & financialy to lead me to sunny australia in the yr 1990 7  out of 7 found this valuable. From the time I was 15 until 20 I worked in Glasgow Royal Infirmary, starting off as the most junior of junior office help. I went to night school in Petershill Public school where I used to sit next to another young woman who went on to marry a cousin of mine. I worked my way up in the GRI until I left to get married and emigrate to Canada. There were many times when I walked from the GRI to Keppochhill Rd. just to save the bus fare money - the walk wasn't too bad except around where the Caledonia works were right opposite what was to become that giant slum Sighthill. At that time there were no hi-rises anywhere but it was a long, lonely walk, usually in the rain. I've seen these picture of Forest Hall before and remember when it was called Barnhill Mental Institution. I had a girlfriend whose mother and father both worked in Forest Hall as nurses - that was in the '50s. Talk about walking, one long one we did as kids under the age of 10 was from Springburn, down Flemington St., along past Barnhill (Forest Hall), up Petershill Rd., and down through the tunnel at the ???? works and ended up in Blackhill, where we were chased back to Springburn by the lovely natives that lived there. If you could have survived a childhood in Glasgow of those days, you could survive anything. Here's a little ditty that says it all:

Born Balgrayhill Schooled Petershill
Worked Keppochhill Married Springburnhill
Sick Stobhill Domiciled Barnhill Rested Sighthill

My first job when I left school in "63" was in WD&HO Wills but I had to leave as I got Industrial Dermatitis caused by the raw tobacco leaves.
People laugh when I tell them that I was allergic to tobacco, considering that I've been smoking for 40+ years.

I left Albert Se.Sec. in 1953 and went to work in the Caley offices, quite a good job in those days, I remember my daddy being so proud that one of his daughters worked in an office. oh my I was 15, and so shy and terribly afraid of meeting new people. Do you find this valuable?

The name of the shop in the Gallowgate that you woked in was called The Oyster Bar. My Dad & Grandpa used to take me there every Sunday for a plate of mussells and a drink of mussell bray. Magic!!!! The mussells were a shilling a plate. We also got dulce a kind of seaweed, full of iodine and iron, brilliant!! Do you find this valuable?

Jan I started my working life in Collins as well. I was 15 and worked there till I was expecting my older son in 1964. I started as an office junior and used to fly all over the place with the mail. Do you remember the underground tunnel linking the buildings? Then went on to the Order Department and was there till I left. Girls I worked with were Betty Watson and Janette McAllister.

My grandfather worked at the Hydepark works.hHe put the ballbearings in the train wheels. He dmmaged his hand there, but all they did was to bandage it and for him to carry on,to the day he died he had a bone sticking up in the palm of his hand, maybe there wasnt any statuary sick pay then. in 1964 until 1968 or so I worked in Heatovent Electric as a N.C.R. Operator, By 1968 i was married but still commuted to Lomond Street Possilpark where my office was in Heatovent, at lunch times on the way for lunch at my mothers in Kay St. I took the Tram Car to Elmvale Street, on these occasions the Conductress was often our friend Fiona Taylor known to us on the site as FionaM. Her lovely late husband Billy Purdon was the tram driver. Im not sure if they were married at this point, but Fiona will tell us im sure. Do you find this valuable?
