Hi Lesley... I remember many years ago in Toronto attending a George Beverly Shea concert .... what a voice! ! You may have seen the Gaither DVD featuring him at 99 - still singing. We have the DVD and really enjoy it. I believe he's now in his 101st year. They (BG, CB and GBS) sure were a great team. Rita Do you find this valuable?

Goodness RitaW...somehow I knew I'd spelled his dear name wrong.. my Mum would never let me live that one down..she adored him and his voice... except for Billy G gatherings..I've never had the pleasure of attending his concert... what a joy that must have been. I listen to a particular radio station always when driving.. with lots of the "oldies but goodies, spiritual music" and some of the finest voices will be heard from time to time... and yes, you are right..that man has a special gift..(there has never been another quite like him). I do have some of Gaither...but not his. I did also hear a lovely story about George B. Shea..recently on that station and it had to do with him as a young man... not compromising on using his GG talent...when asked...he was rejected and someone else was chosen to sing the "popular sounds of that time" yet, on looking back... his faithfulness gave him an amazing long career...that has touched many lives.
He is one I wanna meet...one day.
Lesley

"I forgot to say why I was respoding to this. In the 60's, we also had a minister whose name was the Rev David Black. He was a quite young bloke who embraced the times and the feelings of the 60's, and brought the church back to life with subsequent increased attendances."
Hi Billy, When we moved to Barmulloch in 1953 our next door neighbours were called 'Litterick'. The girl was Roseanne but I don't remember the boy's name. Were they relatives of yours? It is such an unusual name I thought it was worth asking.

"I'm pretty sure Rev Anderson was the minister in Johnston church when I went there as a girl Eleanor and I did hear he went on to be a prison chaplain.

Bunty"
We had a great youth club going back in the late 40's at Johnstone churh hall The dances were held there & the Rev was always around. Together with the Churc h
secretary. That was where my dancing was launched & progressed.
Also we had a Scout group from cubs to scouts to rovers that flourished then. They had good leadership. The Mac Inin's & Ian Mackie

What a fascinating discussion, I have just caught up on it. I probably said before that I attended the Brownies in Palermo St and Mr Telfer's daughter was our Tawny Owl. We were all so excited when she married an American. Margaret Steel was my sixer, I still see Margt as she is married to one of my cousins. I also attended St George's Tron and well remember when Tom Allan died at a very young age. His daughter, Margaret, married an Canadian evangelist. She was widowed quite young and is now back living in Glasgow. Yes, St George's Tron Church has been beautifully refurbished and well worth a visit. I was part of the youth group in the Tron who went out on Seaside Mission along with my sister Moira and her husband Hugh (now Rev Dr Hugh Ormiston). Next week I am off to Mauritius for our Winter visit, changed days from our young days in a Flemington St tenement! Do you find this valuable?

Isobel, I think what makes this conversation so fascination that it's essence is at the heart of what made Springburn that very special place that nourished us so well as children. Almost everyone here speaks of it. The many places to attend like Friday night Gospel Hall (and others) no matter that most of us lived in tiny places some with outside lav's all crushed together in tenenent..buildings, middins to play in (some have said) After the war (WW2) there was an enormous sense of community pride, neigbour support, real values, a sense of safety and security. Also, as is suggested here, The Churches in Springburn, it tells WHO was really at the center of it all. I know Springburn has changed and not just the destruction of all the buildings but, the Core is encouraged to disappear, like other places around the world. When you think about it.. (from an older chat here) I took a count of the community of people which was about 300 roughly at the time and almost 90% of those..all attended a place of faith...as children. Now I find that fascinatiing!

"I wonder if anyone else remebers St Rollox Church down past Petershill Road. I attended Sunday school there.was christened and married there. By the same Minister the Rev, Gourlay Black. i belonged to the Girl Guides at Johnson Church."
Hi Scotslassie, St.Rollox was the one and only church I ever attended. From the Sunday school, into the Life Boys and then the B.B. (181). Rev. Gourlay Black was the minister for almost the entire time I was associated with the church, and he married my wife and I in 1961. I remember the church parades on the first Sunday of the month, when we lined up in Fountainwell Road while the Brownies, Guides and Life Boys marched past and into the church. Sadly the church was burned down by vandals and the 181 B.B. no longer exists, but the memories live on.

Hi Janet, the Rev. Jones first name was Gwynfi, a welshman who came to St.Rollox after Gourlay Black, but in between times there was a minister from New Zealand, the Rev. Johnston. Hope I am not too late with this information

Hi Weemoe: My grandparents (Fletcher) came from England around 1914 and were parishoners of St James Episcopal Church. Grandad was a member of the choir for a time. I was born in 1936 and lived with my grandparents until 1951 when I left for Canada. I was baptised by Rev James McDougal in 1950---my grandmother wanted to have it done before we left the country. Slightly before your time I'm afraid. I'm looking for a photograph of the outside of the church. Best regards

Interesting. Knew Fletchers who lived corner Broomknowes/Broomfield road, just along from Balornock school. They were close friends of my grandparents and had, I think, two grandsons living with them. I also attended St James and we are about the same age, so maybe knew you long ago! Margaret. The Cliff family, Jack, Millar and Jean, Barmulloch Rd., attended St. James's church, Springburn. Do their names "resonate?"

Hi Margaret: You have me spotted. My grandparents were Harold and Beatrice Fletcher who lived at 424 Broomfield Rd. My brither Harold and I live with them from 1943-1951. We both went to Balornock primary and then on to Colston Junior Secondary. All three of my aunts were married at St James. My brother Harold was in the choir.
I now live in Newfoundland and my brother in British Columbia.

Best regards

Garth

Hi Garth - yes remember you and your brother. Our grandparents were friends (mine were Albert and Beatrice Milner, lived round corner in Langrig Road). Think I remember your gran moving away and going to visit her, but might have got her mixed up with someone else; but just hearing the name I can picture her. Its small world. Sorry I don't have any photos of St James, only a wedding one which only shows a bit of wall!! I think the building is away now as the church moved to Bishopbriggs some years ago. May be something on the Mitchell library site.Margaret. Do you find this valuable?

Hi MillyQ st james church has of course moved to bishopbriggs when the mollinsburn st building was demolished, the new church has a web site if you type in St james the lesser bishopbriggs I.m sure you'll get the site. I have always meant to write to the minister and see if any of the congregation have photos of the old church as its just about the only springburn church we dont have a photo of and quite a few of the site members have links with it thro marriage christening and confimation. As a previous paritioner you might be able to find someone in the congregation of the new church that may remember youi JIM

Yes Jim, I've been in the new St James a few times, very modern not like the old one. Garth (see above) was looking for a picture but my wedding ones only show the church wall and a doorway. It was just a tiny little church behind Sighthhill church so there may not be many photos of the outside. I would imagine there will be photos of the old church held somewhere. I had moved to Cumbernauld by the time St James moved to Bishopbriggs so had lost touch although I did go to a couple of events a few years ago. Must have another look next time I am in Bishopbriggs.Margaret. Do you find this valuable?

"Hi Lesley, the minister you refer to was Rev. Tom Allan who was Minister of the Glasgow Tron Church in the CIty Centre. Still there to this day of course, right in the Centre of Buchanan Street. Just to let folks know , this church has just been refurbished...very up todate.....everyone is welcome to call in anytime during the day....door are open....Well worth a wee "keek" in. Jean."
Just caught up with this thread.Jean if I remember correctly the campaign was "Tell Scotland" and Tom Allan was a prime mover in Billy Graham's crusade.I remember going to the Kelvin Hall to hear Graham but the strongest memory I retain is of Tom Allen giving a sermon in Balornock Tron and his message was that too many folk thought that sending the kids to Sunday school,Bible class,Life Boys,BB,Cubs,Scouts,Brownies,Girl Guides with a couple of coppers(ha'pennies or pennies) while they stayed at home made them good Christians.I well rcall the disdain in his voice when he said that kind of offering"wouldn't buy you a fish supper" and I was amazed when the collection plates came round and there were POUND NOTES and TEN BOB NOTES in abundance.
What an orator that man was but also his BELIEF shone through.

Hi Jim: I was in touch with someone at the church in Bishopbrigs and found out the dates when I was Christened and confirmed. She also sent me a couple of images of the inside of the church. I have these on another computer at home. When I find them I can forward them to this site---if I can figure out how to do it.

Regards Garth
