"Hi Adamswell , isnt it great that lots of us have had the opportunity to go to Sunday School. Lovely to read that you still have your wee Bible , and hope you have had a wee read of it too ! I think Mr Heron became Moderator of the Church of Scotland later on. Pity you lost your dad so young, it must have been hard for your mum to be left with such a young child, but it sounds like you turned out well.....and your mum did a good job.x"
Hi Jean, As you know I went to the Gospel Hall but after I left there I attended Sighthill Church and was married there. I was involved in the youth fellowship and was also Guide Captain until 1965. Orma Reside was the Captain before me.

I attended The Ferguson Memorial Church on Palerma St for many years. I was in the Brownies and later on the Girl Guides until I was about 16 yrs old. The minister was Mr Telfer, he lived up the Balgrayhill. He Christened both me and my brother, but in our house instead of the church. I don't know why. I loved harvest Sunday when the church looked very festive and everyone brought food which was placed in front of the alter. I also went to Sunday school and later the young worshippers league. When I went to Sunday school our teacher also had a magazine just like Bunty's which was very shiny and she too folded it over, it fascinated me so much that when I was about 18 years old and had already transfered to the Johnstone church I became a Sunday school teacher for a short time I too folded the magazine and you know it was just as shiny as I had remembered it. Did anyone else go to this church, I don't hear it mentioned Do you find this valuable?

Jean, My family's eternal lives changed ..because of the visit of the Billy Graham team... in Scotland...mid 50's...because of that BG visit...in Glasgow...I will see my "earthly Daddy" again..one day. Have attended Billy's event's again..here in the USA. and participated in the preparation for Billy's coming... which begins many months ahead of that "Great One's" arrival... Not the REAL event.. just the precursor to HIS eventual coming.....my own wee PS...now that you mention it... I have a vague memory of the event of that wedding..I think there was a very visible "down town Glasgow pastor involved"... I wish I could remember his name.... but, knowing so many others (good friends) who managed to perusade the BG team, to come... to their town... in the USA... that one, name (would give me great pleasure to know) Does anyone remember it?
His church was downtown Glasgow ...???

I was born at 24 St. James' Rd., Townhead (now gone) and was christened in the Barony, opposite the Cathedral. When we moved to Balornock when I was five, there were no churches in the schemes at that time and we had to hoof it to Springburn. I attended Springburnhill Parish Church (Hillkirk St., as we called it), until we moved to the Swedish houses, at which time Balornock Tron (later to be Tron St. Mary's) was established in a wee hut...then later a more substantial hall and then a "proper" church. The minister at Springburnhill was Dr. William Fitch, who gave me a Bible when I was 14 (pretty tattered and torn by now!). I believe I may have written before that he became minister of John Knox church in Toronto. Before he was "called," one of the elders of that church with whom I worked in an insurance company checked him out with me! At Balornock Tron, before a permanent minister was called we had this wonderful young Welshman and his wife...and now I wonder if he is the same one you mention. I remember his wife had a stillborn child and how the congregation were so sympathetic. He was tall (in my mind) and slender, and always punctuated everything with, "Listen!" Here I am over sixty years later and I can see him in my mind's eye as clear as if it were yesterday. I wonder if indeed he is the same Welshman by the name of Jones who served St. Rollox. Hello, MaisieEgger, I haven't been on the site for a while but I had to respond to your message. I too attended Springburnhill Parish Church as we lived in 26 Hillkirk Street. I remember Dr Fitch and I still have one or two New Testaments and Bible from the Sunday School for attendance. Many years later I studied then worked in the Bible
Training Institute which eventually became International Christian College and is now in St James Road, Townhead. Incidentally my son and daughter-in-law both graduated in the Barony.

The Barony now belongs to Strathclyde University. Also, because of my work I knew the Rev Gwynfai Jones who was latterly minister of St Rollox until his retirement. Sadly he was knocked down and killed while going to a prayer meeting in another church several years ago.

I guess Jean it wisnae his first name that was Allan... trust you to be the wan who would ken awe that. I now clearly remember the location too, thanks. I really had a nice wee chuckle...with "wee keek".. expression...that one belongs in the archives of Glasgow slang.....it's funny how one can forget... "if you don't use it you lose it". Then of course suddenly one turns up the old conversation...style.. and it all comes flooding back intae ma heid... I then have to translate for my.. English Professor husband.... great fun... he even tries very hard.. to "speak the language". Dinna tell him ah sed so...he no aw that good...et it...he he.
the earlier conversations about old bibles... sparked my goin and gettin doon my mithers wee bible... running my hands over the old dark leather bound treasure and looking at the inscription.. (that was back in the good old days, when bibles were given as primary "school" prizes..it was 1924 when she was a wee lass of 8..) turning the pages again... her girlish handwriting and margin notes.. brough on a rush of sweet nostalgia... the hillkirk church... (lived next door) the sound of the boys brigade..band..practicing...the scripture union (eleanor went there and took me along) and it's funny, how in this place..one can even savor the Springburn aroma...(almost)
Sometimes, it would be really nice if for even jist a wee while..we could turn back the clock... fir another wee keek.

Thank you, Irene, for the fill-ins on the Barony and the Reverend Gwynfai Jones.

I went to Google to see if I could find out if Gwynfai Jones was the same Jones who was the quite young interim minister in the mid-1940s at what was then called Balornock Tron (now Tron St. Mary's), but he appears to be a different Jones who came to Glasgow in 1967.

Per Google article: "OBE---The Rev Edward Gwynfai Jones---Lately Minr, St Rollox Parish Church, Sighthill, Glasgow. For serv Race and commty Relations and Asylum Seekers." There are quite a few references on Google to do with his work with ayslym seekers living in the Sighthill flats.

I wrote to the C of S HQ in Edinburgh one time to see if I could track down this young minister (of the 1940s), to see what happened to him, but I don't recall receiving an answer. I oftern wondered if he ever "secured" a church as a full-time minister.

The photo accompanying the article on Google of the 67 year-old Gynffai Jones does not "resonate." Further, I think the "young" Reverend Jones's wife was either Welsh or English.

This young Jones (I don't recall his first name) was such a sincere young man, and of all the ministers I've been acquainted with in my life he has been the one that has stuck in my mind, more than any other, for whatever reason. Maybe it was always the sort of Welsh inflection to "Listen" that caught my attention! He and his young wife were "sweet," for want of another word. Thinking back on it they must just have been in their mid-twenrties and maybe he was just out of seminary. As I was only 16 then, I am assuming they have departed this world long since!

Hi Lesley, I also remember the Billy Graham crusade in Glasgow very well. I was in the choir under Cliff Barrows so attended almost every night for about six weeks. My parents came to many of the meetings too, and I remember being on the tram cars and people actually singing some of the songs from the crusade. I also attended the BG event when he came to Toronto ... what a great man of God he is! It is wonderful to know that one day we will see our loved ones again. I also remember Tom Allan. I saw him speaking at an open air meeting in Ayr once when I was there visiting my Aunt and I was just a 'wee lassie'. Thanks Jean for reminding me of him. Rita Do you find this valuable?

Jean, I too was in the choir in 1991 when BG was at Murrayfield and Celtic Park. I'll never forget our final practice in Murrayfield and the applause and whistling from the stewards when the choir finished singing "Majesty". It was truly a foretaste of heaven in my opinion. My husband and I were both counsellors too and afterwards we had the pleasure of leading a rather large number of people through the basics of the Christian faith in our home. This was supposed to last for about six weeks but they didn't want to leave and it went on for months. Happy days!

Lovely memories regarding our Springburn church connections whatever our faith. Made me remember Johnston Parish Church at the top of Queenshill Street where I went to Sunday school and Brownies. Sunday school memories were the pastel crayons I used for drawing and when the Sunday school teacher read us the scriptures it was from a glossy Biblical magazine that she would fold over to a half page width...and when I do that with my supermarket magazines brings it all back to mind.
