Hello scotslassie. My Mom and Dad got married at St. Rollox Church and I'm quite sure the minister was Rev. Gourlay Black. That would have been 1951.

"Hi Everyone,Hello crookedtail.Pleased to see you have started posting.I've been checking out the info you sent me and have found a few photos of St Rollox School and Forge st which you mentioned.I'm still seeking further info but so far I can tell you that Forge St still exists in Glasgow but obviously has undergone considerable change.Go on Multimap and type the street name in and you can view it.I've posted a couple of pictures from the area as it used to be in the Photo Gallery.along with St Rollox School as it was around 1916. I believe the school was a charity run facility in it's early days and has been sperseded by St Roch's Primary which is in Royston Rd.This road runs parallel to Forge St.I don't know the exact location of the original school but the current St.Roch's is in an area I always believed to be Townhead which abutted Springburn.I may stand corrected on this by more knowledgeable members of this site. My sister in law is currnetly working in St.Roch's so I have asked her if she can find out more of it's history.I will return if and when anything comes to light. Meanwhile if you google the Mitchell Library,Glasgow and search for St Rollox School you will find much of what I have put here and possibly a bit more. Good luck and I hope you get much pleasure from the site. Do you find this valuable? |

"Hello St Rollox was a big place in my life from BB dances etc and passing it on my way round Fountainwell Road I posted a pic of your Rev Black somewhereHi all, I used to go to Springburn Baptist Church -was on their cradle roll there in 1952 or 3. I also attended Sunday School there where every Sunday morning I was given money for the normal collection and money for the missionaries. For this, there was a little metal bank in the form of a black picanin. You would put the pennies in his hand and pull the lever on his back and he would swallow the coin. I don't think somehow it would be politically correct today. Anyway, I was in the church's Boys' Brigade No 202 until about 1970, where I managed to get the Queens Badge. Our BB captain was Alex McMillan who was kind enough to arrange a reunion with a lot of my old BB and church friends in December 2000 when I was over on holiday. I also attended the band of hope which was held on Wednesday nights in the old Labour Party hall in Ayr St - only two doors down from where I stayed. Good days. Do you find this valuable? |

He was a quite young bloke who embraced the times and the feelings of the 60's, and brought the church back to life with subsequent increased attendances. Do you find this valuable? |

I went to church and sunday school at St. Rollox during the era of Rev. R. Gourlay Black. The church was at the corner of Springburn Road and Fountainwell Road (or Street, I can't remember). Like Fiona, I went because I was made to. Later, our family went to Sighthill Church and I was in the Lifeboys there. I was probably made to do that too, but I enjoyed it. At the Lifeboys, we did MAZE marching and for years I wondered who May was and why she had marching named after her.

My wife and I were members of the Springburn United Free Church on the Balgray (on the site of what is now the Park Gates Centre). We were married there 30 years ago this June. Sadly the congregation dwindled during the early part of the 80s and it "closed for business" towards the end of that decade. I have in my possession an old 35mm cine reel of a Sunday School trip from the days of the U.F. church when it was situated on Edgefauld Road near to the Wellfield Street high flats. If anyone has any ideas how to convert this to DVD format I could post bits of it on here. Do you find this valuable? |
