Churches, Springburn
Sep 28 2008, 5:56 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 28 2008, 5:56 PM EDT
When I was young, I attended the Sighthill Church for Sunday School as it was quite near the end of my Street . In 1951 when I was almost 10, I was given a Holy Bible from Minister Willam Heron from Sighthill Church in memory of my father William who died in 1942 ( I was only one year old when he died) . He dated it 22nd February 1951 with the Verse John 5:39 to look up. I still have this Bible in my possession to-day. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi Adamswell , isnt it great that lots of us have had the opportunity to go to Sunday School. Lovely to read that you still have your wee Bible , and hope you have had a wee read of it too ! I think Mr Heron became Moderator of the Church of Scotland later on. Pity you lost your dad so young, it must have been hard for your mum to be left with such a young child, but it sounds like you turned out well.....and your mum did a good job.x Do you find this valuable?

Unfortunately Jeanmccrae, my mother was never around when I was young, she took to the drink shortly after my father died (could you blame her really!!) and we were taken away by the Welfare and I went to stay with my Grandmother who looked after me until I got married. It is her I thank to this day. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

I'm pretty sure Rev Anderson was the minister in Johnston church when I went there as a girl Eleanor and I did hear he went on to be a prison chaplain.

Northcroft Road.I was Baptised,Confirmed and Married in St. Alysius Church in
Hillkirk St. It's a joy to see it's still there. Thanks very much to the person who posted the pics of the church. They really bring back memories.

Hi Welly, another coincidence as my family all went to St James's Episcopal Church on Molinsburn St !! That's where I was christened, I think the minister s name was Rev, McDougall, although I'm not 100% on that. I have our family Bible, it belonged to my GGGgrandfather, who came from England and was a Church Warden

But to stay on the thread subject , we attended a Gospel Hall for a number of years in Toronto. ..........................Hugs returned with love..............lenziegirl xxx

Hello Auldlenziestgirl. I know what you mean by homesickness. I moved from a flat in Northcroft Road to Lenzie Street, #8. I left for America in 1963. Have lived here ever since. I live in Maryland, Glad to see another Lenzie St. pal on the site, Betty Mcintosh,

Fi I think you're right, we must all have passed each other at some point without knowing it all these years ago..Being from Queenshill Street I went to Johnston church at the top of the row. My memory of Sunday School was the teacher reading out the lesson from a shiny page publication but she always folded it in two then folded it again and there was the pastille crayons that we used to draw our Biblical scenes on black paper...I've still got my Cradle Roll joining the church as a baby...must look it out and post it .

I wonder if anyone else remebers St Rollox Church down past Petershill Road. I attended Sunday school there.was christened and married there. By the same Minister the Rev, Gourlay Black. i belonged to the Girl Guides at Johnson Church.
