Avonspark Street

Many thanks for the photos Jim, I'm sure Lewscot will find it useful to see what sort of housing there was in the street . Although the number 201 is no longer there, next door is. I did notice when I was up in Glasgow last year that the corporation must have been painting nearly every house in the city. looked very nice I must admit...particularly down in the Ruchill area. 5  out of 5 found this valuable. Well what a great job you all have done !
My sister will be over the moon especially as she fell down those steps, and still has the scars. I remember my dad's youngest brother Donald lighting ciggies in the grass at the front of 167, he was using a magnifying glass, sun and paper, he must have been about 15 at the time. Yours Andy McFall

Yes, I am over the moon.
I think my grandparents moved in when it was new, either from Hawthorn Street or Elm vale St. They started their married life in Cowlairs Rd. My Grandfather worked in the Calley, as did my Dad and my Grandmother during the war...helping the war effort . That may be an interesting subject for discussion, how many more women were doing really hard work in those dark days. My grandfather was not working due to illness, he died the week the war broke out, and there were young mouths to feed . From what we have been told it was really hard work, but we were never told the truth, and our grandmother was too proud to do anything else.
Bye

Thanks for the great photos Jim.Your`e a star!!
Those houses don`t look anything like I had imagined.I was pretty surprised, although they probably look quite different to how they would have looked when my dad lived there in the 40`s.
To be honest most of my memories are of Drumchapel [until I was nine],so I had always imagined my dad had also grown up in a tenement building.
I very much appreciate you taking the time to look out for no 201,taking the photos and giving a description of the insides.I hope that good turn comes back to you !!!
Cheers,
Born 62.

Hi Wellfield, I reckon it must have been the 1930's I remember them as a youngster and somewhere there is a photo of me and my cousins very young. The houses have obviously been reclad in the last couple of years , it still a bit indian country but the houses were great houses and still are. as you can see from the first photo the end nearset the red road has been demolished and there is new building going on. I have many great memories of Avie, my best mate Big Cammy stayed in the Crescent and my first sweetheart Janie Hamilton also stayed in Avonspark St, but at the Oatfield St end, up the same close as Jim and Jockey Bain and the Fern's Clan, Joe Tunilla and the Irvine's.
I spoke to Sanny Irvine at my young Brothers Funeral last week, first I had seen him in years.
Avonspark St for all it's toughness, had people staying there who were the salt of the Earth

You are correct Bluezulu for all its faults Avonspark Street was anything but the worst place to be brought up as a a child. I was born there in 1944 at No.22, and only left when our family moved to Cockmuir Street in 1964. By that time all of my big brothers and sisters had flown the nest and we moved to a smaller house which was built where the prefabs once stood.Upstairs from us we had a Grade One referee who officiated at Scottish cup finals. Wouldn't find a grade one ref staying in a Corporation house today. Think I knew your pal Big Cammy, did he run the Petershill R.S.C. which left from Millarbank Street? I must say however that those of us from the bottom half of the street always thought it was a good place to live don't know about the other end.

No kenboy, Big Cammy was a Member as was I but did not run the Peasie RSC Bus.
He did run the Orange Halls in Millarbank St. though
His House was the 1st one up the Crescent, his older sister Gina is closer to your age, Cammy would have been 57 on Thursday, but he passed away in 2001.
He was a Legend in Springburn and Avie, when we were 18ish we drunk in Clarks and all the Old Ladies would have Cammy in the Lounge singing for them lol

Hey Kenny, Did you know any of the McNair's that lived in Avonspark Street?? I served my time with Jimmy at Metro - Vickers on Petershill Road and he and his brothers have all ended up here in Canada over the years. I'm still in contact with them and others that served their time at Germiston works. As a footnote Harry Hood's dad was one of the security guards there when I was there!! I played with Harry at Campsie Black Watch - he was obviously a wee bit better than me.

Hello Maurice,

Yes I knew Jim McNair and his older brother John. Maybe Harry was just a wee bit luckier than you

Hi Kenny, Jim and I are in regular contact, as we're both lovers of single malt, but I only see John and Chic occasionally since I moved last year. I 've used that line regarding Harry with people, but he was a wee bit more dedicated than me, but I've no complaints.
