Jun 5 2008, 2:12 PM EDT I remember the Grain Store. The woman that served in there used the same scoop to take the bird seed as the macaroni of porrige!! Therefore there was sometimes bird seed in your macaroni cheese!! Do you find this valuable? |

Instant porridge.., as you say our parents wouldn't have ate it. Jun 8 2008, 8:14 PM EDT I lived at 34 Crichton Street between march 1972 and april 1973. The corner shop was still there but just a general dairy. Bunty you cant micro porridge, my old man would be spinning in its grave. I can make it spot on manually and yes a bit of salt, but no sugar for me thanks! Do you find this valuable? |

Probably when I was young the oats came from the Grain Store next to Kay Street. Either way it does us all good...Bunty Do you find this valuable? |

It's the real stuff too, it's just quicker that way. Do any of you remember the shop on Springburn Road past Hoeys which sold all sorts of things. I think it was called a 'cut price shop' but I always called it the 'cup price shop' because they sold cups as well and I really thought that was it's name. I used to go down there every Saturday with my pocket money and get something out of their lucky dip - usually a plastic brooch which I'd proudly give to my mother. Incidentally, my father used to say that if he won the pools he'd give my sister her share immediately because she was good with money but mine would be doled out weekly because I'd spend it as soon as I got it. He was right - I always spent my pocket money immediately while my wee sister could save hers. Do you find this valuable? |

Jun 12 2008, 5:41 AM EDT Don't think anyone has added shop in Mansel St. opposite Albert School - think it was called Thomsons. Us sweet-deprived kids of the 40s and early 50s bought our 'ice cubes' there - thats what they were, literally ice cubes coloured with some orange squash, but we loved them. Incidentally Haddows in Campsie St was Crawfords during the 30s and the family lived next door in the house facing Hillhouse St. Do you find this valuable? |

It was a shop that sold a little bit of everything, but every year at Christmas they would have a whole window display of dolls. We used to stand there at that window in awe of the dolls. I never knew anyone who actually got one of those dolls. They were so expensive. But it was nice to dream. Betty Do you find this valuable? |
