Closure of Springburn Museum
Feb 17 2008, 4:22 PM EST Was unaware until a few days ago that the museum had actually shut. The council spokesman is quoted as saying "We are not forcing the museum to shut, but without funding it is not viable". All for a measly £30,000. A years salary for many nowadays. An absolute disgrace. Soon there won't be anyone left to answer the question "What was Springburn like?" A great pity and all the more reason why this site is so important. 27 out of 27 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Closure of Springburn Museum
Feb 17 2008, 4:31 PM EST I only had the opportunity to visit the museum twice...the last in 1993 when I was home for my mums funeral..., marvellous exhibits, every one a memory, sheer nostalgia. Even just going through the door brought childhood memories of the childrens section of the library. Shame some benefactor couldn't have been found at the time to keep it alive as part of our heritage. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 18 2008, 5:31 AM EST "Checked out the website and yes your right Bonny..no great details but there does seem to some exhibits. Steve would it be possible on one of your Glasgow trips to check it out, please."Hi...I have already done so. There is nothing on show at the present time apart from a couple of ancient scans of what looks to me like the Graham collection pinned onto the wall in the library. (to avoid confusion I mean of course the new library at the Leisure centre Kay Street, the old Ayr Street one is now a college resource and learning centre.) The museum is supposed to be relaunching some of its artifacts in this buiding, it was meant to happen four months ago but I hear that water damage has prevented the earmarked room from being used. We are monitoring the situation and in fact both Stillgame and I had tea at Mosesfield House with Mr Gray and his wife just last week...they reside there and run the Historical society. We will be keeping in regular contact with them and of course update any news. The Springburn museum collection was split up. Some of it has been lost or in storage, but sadly as with everything to do with Springburn it just seems there is a lack of will among the decision makers 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Closure of Springburn Museum
Feb 19 2008, 11:14 AM EST I was fortunate enough (I won't say lucky) to be visiting my old town on the very day the museum was about to close. I'd been a regular visitor there in the previous years. They were selling off a lot of the old museum materials - plastic souvenirs, and photogrpahs they'd been using for exhibits. As little as I wanted to be a vulture, i did buy up a load of photos, especially the rare ones around High Bedlay etc. Very sad to see it go, and the 'online' version of it is good but doesn't cut it for me. I loved visiting the museum, partly because it was my old childhood library! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Closure of Springburn Museum
Feb 22 2008, 3:51 PM EST I had the pleasure of visiting Springburn Museum when I was visiting the UK in 1990. The staff made me very welcome and when I returned home I was glad to send them the photograph of my mother, Margaret Kyle, as a fifteen-year-old cashier with the rest of the staff of the Springburn Coop in 1917. The same picture appears elsewhere on this site. I was able to view a slide show of Springburn as it had been before a lot of the demolition had taken place and was given an informative commentary by a gentleman who had lived in Springburn all his life. It brought back memories of my parents' stories of Old Springburn, in the days when my father, David Campbell served his apprenticeship at Cowlairs, and my grandfather, Alexander Kyle played football for Petershill. My mother had fond memories of dancing with the "red Clydesider", Jimmy Maxton when he was on a visit to Springburn I received regular newsletter from the museum for a number of years and was very sad to hear that it had closed. I thought it played an important part in keeping the local history of Springburn alive. Regards, Jean 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Closure of Springburn Museum
Feb 23 2008, 9:16 AM EST The photos weren't where I thought they were (downstairs filing cabinet) so will take a more extensive search to dig out. I have found the cine film, though, and I'm transferring that to YouTube format as we speak. Will post a message when it's done. Couple of nice shots of Elmvale St, a lot of shaky camerawork with my mum and dad in their 60s getup. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |
