Springburn Museum
Feb 17 2008, 4:14 PM EST
I joined the museum shortly after it opened, it was full of great exhibits from the area. Lots of people gave photographs, objects relating to life in the area both domestic and work related. They also held lectures, one I remember was on sculpture and it lasted for about 6 weeks, George Wylie gave a lecture on his work and inspiration for it. Another artist came and while discussing sculpture create a bust of one of the members. It really was part of the community, and like this site had many visitors from foreign parts returning down memory lane. I remember on one visit there was a video playing of the church parade in the avenue pictured on this site. It was quite strange to watch your younger self marching smartly past. The staff were mainly volounteers who like ourselves loved springburn and who could recount tales just as we do of their life and work in springburn. You would often see the suntanned stranger chuckling to himself as he viewed the exhibits that brought back fond memories for them. Like Steve its loss was tragic but it was like the district it represented pushed aside by the council and forgotten were the years that its residents put them into power year after year. I believe some of the resources of the museum ended up in The Mitchell Library pity we could not revive some more of them now. 19  out of 19 found this valuable. Do you?

I wonder what happened to all these artifacts that were housed in the museum. looking at that old washing machine in the photo I'd swear it was my wee mammy's. I can still smell the rubber hosepipe when filling it with hot water. Thank goodness for automatics as those old machines were lethal. Do you find this valuable?
