Thanks for the latest pics, Jim. I well remember the Ashfield but it was greyhound racing when I used to serve up pies and Bovril from the old train wagon...not sure where it was situated. That woud have been around 1958/9. I wore my hair really short then and wore black and some of the old punters used to come up and say " A pie and a Bovril, son" There was me just a lass of 15 as well, lol. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. I think you'll agree that Stevdr is due many compliments on the organising of this site, and to aquire all of its contents in such a short period of time, and I hope that all of his goals are achieved ,I know that many are helping, and giving,so thanks to them also.Personally, the site gives me great pleasure,it's like looking at a little film of your childhood years, and to our young adult years, when we all went in different directions, but now are all back together again in mind and thoughts, and as you know, these thoughts and memories are priceless. Thanks again Oldspringburn! Do you find this valuable?

I totally agree with you Wellfield ...... well done Steve you're doing a grand job so you are - as for the photo's each one suddenly triggers of a memory of scents and sounds of days gone by and it's instant transportation to days in the park or shopping with Nana down Springburn High Street, early evening showings at Prince's cinema .... Thank you for the trips down Memory Lane, it's truly amazing so it is, fair deed brullant lol Do you find this valuable?

I might even have served you the pie Bill. I had a Saturday evening job selling pies and Bovril in the old train wagon. That would be about 1960/61. But that was the greyhound racing not the football.

It was really the fact that the Old Museum aws taken down..meant that there was a real danger of Springburn's past disappearing altogether which inspired it. I used to study there when I did at paper on the Railways for my History Degree at Glasgow Uni...mid 90s sadly its no longer there although at least the library building is back in use as a resource centre.

just looking at the photos. Great to see the old speedway programme. That was a great night out when we were teenagers. Who can forget Ken le Breton - the white ghost - and how all us girls broke our hearts when he was killed racing in Australia. The stadium was always packed particularly when it was the local derby, Ashfield Giants versus Glasgow Tigers!! I can still recall the unique 'cindery' smell from the track. Great memories. Good memory milly9,I still remember the smell, along with the white ghost was Dick Tiger,Merv Harding,Tommy Miller,Keith Gurtner,Larry Lazerus, and the Edinburgh Monarchs were another arch rival---I think Bunty served tea and Bovril around the same time at Ashfield. Aye the corners were the place to stand for the hot and smelly cinders!!

Hi I used to sneak into the Ashfield Speedway to watch Ken Le Breton & his teamate Larry Lazarus- the smell of the speedway is never forgotten. When he was killed it was so tragic--many years later after I went to work in Ingram St a workmate took me to her house in Townhead at dinnertime and low and behold her husband was THE Larry Lazarus ! Later when The Ashfield became a greyhound track my brother Kenny MacDonald raced his two greyhounds there. He used to practice their racing ability behind the plots near the coup in Springburn Road, I would wave the hanky and they would fly like the wind. My dad also had a plot across the street where he had hens- but they were always being stolen ( must have been marauders from Possilpark ) . so he eventually gave that hobby up.......Flora Do you find this valuable?
