Great photos Steve...lots of memories there..the Steamie, I well remember the stalls where the sinks were and the big round thing in the centre of the first pic is a spin dryer. The steamie was upstairs and you had to 'bump' the old pram full of washing up to get into the steamie .You had to prebook your ticket and were given a time slot. As a girl I used to go with my mother but no children were allowed in so we had to sit at the top of the steps and wait. The public baths were also up the srairs where you had the woman in charge fill up your bath then turn it off...no taps on the bath she used a nut wrench!. When I moved back to Springburn in 1964 after I married I still used the steamie for about 3 years. The black & white photo of Balgary swing park shows the big shed at the far end , it had a wooden bench that ran all the way round it and we used to get up and run all the way round..dare devils, eh. The picture with the tram and showing the fruiterers shop , well I lived in the flat above the fruit shop for a couple of years. Thanks for that. 18  out of 18 found this valuable. Do you?

Wonderful pic's Steve, especially the one with the two wee women standing chatting outside the Co-op.As a man,I could never figure to this day,why the Scottish women stood there for ages, without setting down their wee message bags.Aye' bunty,I remember Taylor's well,we used tae' fight through the Wasps then load up our Jukes' wi' pea pods, then run like hell wi' the man shouting at us. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. There was me feeling all nostalgic and all, then I read Jim's message and burst oot laughing again! Fantastic photo's I must agree as off I wondered down memory lane, remembering walking with my Nana in and out the shops - the very polite passing conversation "Goodmorning / Goodafternoon Mrs ????" and on Nana carried not stopping to blether right there in the street. That was an awfy long walk back to Burnbrae St and I'm no surprised now I'm so wee, my Nana must've worn ma wee leggies right down lol 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

The very first picture here shows the close I lived up - right between Curley's and a fish shop. Nice and smelly in the summer with the big bluebottles flying over the fish. You can even see the No. 333 which I always thought had something to do with the No. 33 tram! I lived there before that crosswalk had been installed with the Belisha beacons and you took your life in your hands trying to get across the road. In another picture showing the old laundry building next to the fire department, it was one of their trucks that hit me while I was coming home from school. Very good pictures! Steve and Buntygal, once again yours truly has been scrolling through the Photos of old Springburn 2 and once again, I have discovered something I must have missed on the last "journey."
Whoever found the pictures of Vulcan Street, deserves a bouquet. In the clearest one, where the gentlemen are conversing outside the public convenience, look to the right of the picture and you see the old tenement and (gulp) my grandpa's close at number thirty-eight just next to the house with the main door. This was where we children were taken, in our siren suits, when there was an air raid and stowed safely underneath the sturdy table, until the all clear sounded. Pass me the tissues, somebody.
Thanks for the memory.

That would be Steve to thank Beryl as he's responsible for obtaining many of the old Springburn photos...brilliant memory for you too. I had a look back on it and the clarity is just great, that chap looking up to the other one says it all. And the siren suits, yup can just see you in one, lol. As to the tissue would you like Kleenex or Morrisons own brand.

Indeed I do, Wellfield. The entire street would wait in anticipation for the magnificent new engine to emerge on some sort of vehicle (as in one of the excellent picture sites) and there would be cheering and workmen who took such great pride in their achievement would gather at the gates to watch..They woukd have blackened faces and oil stained dungarees and they would doff their bunnets in tribute to the new production which would have its name written on the side, and we children would cheer our heads off and be given a penny to spend to celebrate.
Springburn folk would line the streets to wave to the new engine which would be immaculate and en route to some foreign country....
.Oh. I need more of your Kleenexes, Bunty.
Could hardly believe I was seeing the old Railway Mission in one of the latest Springburn 6 collection. It was almost like looking out of our Vulcan Street kitchen window once again. Except that sadly, the houses of Springburn Road in the background look like they were being demolished and that includes the high back where I was sent to play every day.
It is heartbreaking to see our wonderful Springburn being killed off, and as someone wisely said in an earlier thread, what the wartime Germans failed to do to Springburn, the Council succeeded.
Aye, but they canny kill our precious memories. And I am so grateful to have found this site and the amazing ex-pats who wander along with me through those memories and share them to keep them alive.
Well done, and again thanks to Steve for everything you contribute to this site ,and for your latest batch of historical pictures, many congratulations!
(Thanks for the tissues, Bunty. I will have another wallow in nostalgia before bedtime, as usual.)
