Hiya chunkybear, I went to Albert Secondary but I left it in 1963 so it was way before your time. I was married with two kids, another one on the way and living in London by the time you left Albert.

Linda is one of the the youngsters on the board, she lived n Galloway Street...........hang about, I'm sure she'll be along eventually to blether to you.

I went to Albert High School in 1940 I just did not like it, and when I got to the age I could leave,I got out fast maybe it was a place that was to much for me at that time,I dont know, but it has no good memories for me while I attended Albert,I would like to hear if anyone at that period, had the same or similar dislikes of Albert as I did,I cant believe I am the only one who never got the pleasure out of High School Do you find this valuable?

Hi Parachute, your not alone,I hated Colston with a passion, and was issued a (Dogger's)card by the authorities at John St,it had to be initialled each period by the class teacher, then turned back weekly to John St---Springburn Park was my Secondary school.

Hi Fi you are dead right about the big Albert...I had an S2 on my quali cert but in no way did Albert give me any encouragment, apart from Art. Wanted to go to Uni but family funds couldn't stretch. Gained academic qualifications in my own right when I was older..but as you say certainly no thanks to Albert...unless of course it was in Latin !!!!!

Excuse me, but were we supposed to actually like Albert? I thought the fact that your "quali" results designated you to a senior secondary school was considered a triumph? No disrespect to Colston, which was a junior secondary., Of course there were areas which you suffered in silence. Of the eight (?) periods a day there would surely be at least one you enjoyed?
Some teachers way back in the 1950's were too handy with "the belt", some used heavy sarcasm, some put the fear of God into you. Remember Miss Ross, the science teacher?
Yet she taught me something I have never forgotten to this day. "It is no crime to be ignorant, but it is a crime to conceal it." In other words, never pretend you understand something in order to appear knowledgeable because you will surely be found out. Always ask if you don't know.
Have to admit, that was wise advice which has served me well.
They, the teaching establishment, said we girls would cry on our last day at school. Not a chance, we replied.
I wept buckets on my last day. And I get a lump in my throat when I look at the old photograph of Albert and the memories come flooding back. Does distance lend enchantment to the view? Who knows. Can honestly say I did enjoy English, art, languages, music even if the female singing teacher did not tnink me suitable for a part in The Mikado (big disappointment, disliked her) and thanks to Miss Ross, I did miraculously pass science exams. Remember the litmus test? Oh goad, that's about all I do recall.
Anyway, having left at third year to pursue a career in the theatre, I can honestly say I respected Albert Senior Secondary School.
Fast forward some decades later. I was now in the newspaper business and in our Edinburgh canteen one day, spotted two young lady visitors wearing Albert grey, maroon and blue scarves and blazers. I felt so proud of them and Albert. Tradition rules!

Hi Berylbeattie while reading your lines about Albert I read you were being honest about Albert, the good and the bad,but I think there was a few of us,that just found it a bit hard, learning with the way,s of the time,as you wrote about them, the belt, the belt, the belt, the sarcasm of the teachers and I also believe the biggest percentages of the scholars gained more from the ways of teaching while there, than the few who found it a trial,I also went through the maroon and grey pride,at one time,my wife also went to Albert, and when we got married we went to live in my father in laws house,we also done our bedroom in marroon and grey, but in retrospect I was one that had more bad days, than good memories at Albert, also I cant say Albert was completely bad for me,I dont know that, but like you said, who,s to say while being taught, that we were supposed actually like Albert,or on the other hand, dislike Albert. Don`t know what to say, I liked Albert !!!! I took Boys Tech , Good Home+Maths Teacher. Good Arts , Sci., Tech. Not so hot with French, but the teacher Was HOT!!! German Good. `tho it didn`t help with all the Germans I met In Vancouver. Like a Yank trying to understand Glesa Patter. All in All I`d give Albert Pass marks. I had a fair.ly good career in Marine and Structural Fields. Taught under Los Angeles City School District, for a while. So Albert helped me a wee bit I think !!!! I found That anyone with 2 or 3 years at Albert Were as good or better than some of the College students I came across. Of Course thats only MHO. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi tennscot got to agree with you about Albert I got a good education, A good few beltings as well, but I was in the tech class and we were destined to be tradesmen. So I lapped up all the techy subjects and the maths and science. The english was ok the french was ajoke because we our class that is were suposed to be to thick to understand a foreign language. Made it through 4th year took the prize for Technical, didnt learn anything new until I sat onc . The techy teachers made me what I am ,they were great guys and I was glad to have been in their class. I ve work all over and been able to hold my own in the oil business, neuclear industry and managed to make a good living thanks to my years at albert.

Hello Parachute, no I didn't like big Albert while I was there. Too much bullying went on which the teachers ignored, and I left as soon as I could. I was there a few years aftr you, round about 1949. Looking back now though, when you hear what goes on in some schools, the old Albert wasn't so bad. I think I was just too shy to cope with it, and agree with all that you say that maybe it was too much for us at that time. Anyway didn't do me any lasting harm, and its sad to see the old building away - I lived right across the road from it and it was the first thing I saw every morning when I looked out the window!!

Hello Millyo,I dont remember the bullying, but I am sure it was there,my problem was the belt, and the undertones of the belt, thats a form of teacher bullying maybe worse than the playground bully,s who are usually thick,I dodged school only once in my school day,s,I wrote my own excuse note, and it was not accepted, and I was sent to the Headmaster I know his first name was Richard because his "non de plume" outside was 'Wee Dick' I dont remember his last name,he belted me with crossed hands thrree tines, and I can only say with a force that I have remembered to this day, even now as I write,I feel my emotions rising thinking of that punishment,I am sure even back then they should have known a better way to deal with me,than that belt,at times I would have loved revenge for the ache he left me with, but that was out of the question for a thirteen year old,so I swallow,it but I always remember it,I can say it never done me any harm I am now Eighty Years old,a lot older than I ever thought I would reach, but my memories keep up with me. HK
