Absolutely brilliant photo of the ladies of Adamswell Street. A formidable force and the faces of hard working women. Reminded me so much of how my mother looked liked a few years earlier. And the wee girl on the trike, I always wanted a trike with the wee sort of breadbin on the back, but it wasn't to be afforded. My sister and I had one roller skate between us,lol. 13  out of 13 found this valuable. Do you?

Whereabouts would the tenement gardens be...perhaps at the top of Hillkirk Street, only a guess but would be interested to know. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Yes, it is a wonderful shot. I have made and distributed to libraries a poster and I included this picture for its power and we have no copyright issues.
Incidentally, It was the wee girl on the Trike who sent us the Picture...!

Thanks for the photos Jim. I don't think the ice cream cart came to my street as that's a new on on me. The woman in the dust cart reminded me of my mother. I think all Glasgow women had a coat like that, lol,Brilliant. The bashed bins look the same though. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

not sure but I don'e think so..the tenements seem wrong somehow. The only ice cream I ever saw was from the tlly at the start of Balgray Hill. meant to ask where in Wellfield street did you live sort of across from the picture house or at the newer house ... 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Hi Bunty, we lived in the tenements,Wellfield St/Orwell St,one block down from the The Astor, lower corner house, right by that large bit of spare ground, the next street would have been Croftbank St. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Right you are sir...well I've a couple of marks on my knees to prove I fell over some boulders in the spare ground on the right of the Welfield pic house. Does Orwell St or is it Anderson St that still remains....

what a great pic of the ice cream man..it is of course Carlisle street at the corner of the last tenements of Gourlay street...I was up there recently standing on the virtually the same spot where this pic was taken over sixty years ago....just beside the grass at a sadly desolate Cowlairs park

There was a big Italian presence in Gourlay Street Crichton Street Keppochill Road..but by the 60s when I was a nipper they were using a small van not a cart as in the pic..he was a creepy looking character with thick black specs..unlike today sold nothing else but ice cream..a 99 was a luxury for me...although I was more of an ice lolly fanatic
