Springburn to Sydney what a difference!
Jan 12 2008, 12:52 AM EST
I was born in Stobhill hospital, where my grandfather (Joe Gerrard) was also an ancillary worker - mum and dad had a wee flat on Great Western Road, but ma mammy was staying with her mammy in Burnbrae Street around the time of my arrival - my dad was in the navy so we were frequently off elsewhere but always returned to Grans until we found a new house. I loved Springburn park, guddling in the ponds for sticklebacks and minnows and seeing who managed to catch the most and keep them in a jam jar lol Stepping into the hothouse was like being transported instantly to some far off tropical land, steamy moist air, damp smelling earth, odd looking ferns and plants too - I was so sorry to see a picture lately showing they have been left in what can only be described as a very dilapidated state. I remember high tea with Gran at the Women's Guild which held meetings above the Co-op and I was allowed to attend as I was such gid wee lassie an' ma grannies friends just loved me to bits - I was only there for the cakes forget the tea. I can see Springburn as if I was there just yesterday - we watched those flats in the Red Road being built over the years from my grans garden - jings what a bad idea they were really.

I went to Balornock Primary School and fondly remember Miss Noble's sweety tin after Friday's spelling, dictation and mental math tests - those were the days. I also vividly remember Miss Murray for being an absolute stickler for keeping ye'r elbow tucked well in when writing or she would whack it with a ruler -( child cruelty or what lol ) Kids these days have no idea how easy they have it - I had to walk such a distance to and from school come rain, hail, sleet or snow no mammy in a 4wd parked outside the school gates for me!

'Scuse me a mo whilst I go off in my own mind down memory lane again.

I moved to London after a stint in the forces, then moved to Hampshire and went swimming one day and ended up out here Bonny lol And thanks for the invite to come viewing in here, I've had a great time reading everyone's stories and memory's - I've asked my brother to also pass the link to our Uncle who lives in Partick, but he's Springburn lad and hopefully he might well have a heap of photos that can be used - no promises, but we might be lucky.

Wellfield - I loved those hothouses ...... I could never pronounce the latin plant name at the time, but they stood me in good stead eventually as I did become an avid gardener, until I moved out here .... at least in Scotland the bugs don't grow to such gargantuan proportions as they do out here and very rarely do they bite you back north of the border lol My mum often took us up the park regardless of the weather and we always had a great laugh or a good heat in the hothouse on really frosty days. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Well, would you believe it! I've just gotten off the phone speaking to ma mammy and she telt me, ma wee sister, who was born in Malta and had never seen snow or ice before - on returning to Springburn we all trekked up the hill to visit the park and Fiona decided to walk on the iced pond, not realising it wasn't solid yet and in she went! Another silt smeared, pond weed reeking victim who turned a delicate shade of blue! lol

The picture conjured to mind, Jim hatless and shoeless and dripping in pond weed, has me off in fits of laughter again - what a pity no one took a photo 'cause that would have been absolutely priceless lol

I prefer pineapple chunks myself wellfield, but if you're buying I'll no be too fussy lol Why did pear drops always remind us of nail polish remover, odd that eh?
