John Mr Laird does sound familiar, all I know is he wore a lot of tweed and had a monobrow but was a good teacher. Now that science teacher, Mr Mills he totally freaked me out, hated having him as a teacher. He maybe did belt boys, never girls but he put me off science for a good while! Yeah, I remember the sex ed but not sure what you mean by Section 6? Is that coz they separated the boys and girls for that part of the curriculum or could your parents opt you out of it? I remember it being totally hilarious as the first thing he asked us girls to do was draw male and female genitals. You can imagine what pictures drawn by 12/13 year old lassies would look like back then. We didny have a clue. We didny have a clue after the lessons either, as it took weeks of studying pistils and stamens on flowers before we had even reached the great apes, never mind humans! We would have made great botanists as I recall, but were none the wiser re the birds and the bees. (My memory for the teacher's names is so bad coz I've been to 3 high schools including Colston, that's my excuse and am sticking tae it).

Hi jm, Section 6 was the section in the scence lesson that covered sex education, I think between 1st and second year, science was divided up into modules that covered various subjects, when you got to section 6 it covered sex ed.Cheers Les Do you find this valuable? |

I also remember miss Syme for music - what a horrific teacher!, I wonder if she would look back now (if she's still alive) and realise how bad she was!

I might add Cameron Roberts (Headmaster ...eh..eh), Mr. Hood (Commercial),Mr. McCracken (lead role in Pirates of Penzance), and Doc Taylor (French). I'll probably remember others as soon as I post this! :-) Do you find this valuable? |

Hi there, I must be one of the golden oldies because most of the names mentioned in this link all came after my time at Colston. e.g., 1959 - 1962. Somewhere on the site there is mentioned made of Mr. Riddle. He taught us Geography - I think. He certainly had a class in the old building on the upper floor. Opposite him, on the other side of the square was Miss McEwan. Now she was a brilliant teacher. I enjoyed her classes. Most of the time she wore her black gown and some really really old-fashioned round-toed, 6" thick high heeled shoes. On prize giving day (which used to be held in the church across the road from the school) most of the lady teachers got dressed up in their posh clobber and I remember Miss McEwan turning up in these most amazing pink peralized really pointed high heeled shoes. The heels must have been about 5" high - fabulous. Also, just next to Miss McEwan class, tucked away round the corner was Mr. Levack's room. I always thought he was a bit of a nutter. On one occasion he was reading us "The Charge of the Light Brigade". He grabbed the pole used to open the windows and was charging around the class like a proper lunatic using this pole as though it was a lance. Even al these years later I can still remember the school song - it went as follows:-"Colston, Colston, source of our pride, Fame will be thine to boast and to guide, Wherever I roam on land or on sea, Thy name will be honoured and gloried by me. Here in thy shade we have learned to be free, Here may we cherish our duty to thee, Together we give you this wonderful toast, To sing and to shout it from coast unto coast, Then 1st verse again. Are you all singing along with me. MARGARET STURMEY (Nee Dalziel) Do you find this valuable? |

Really enjoyed your story Margaret, been a while since anything new been posted. I must confess I did not know Colston had a school song, but then I was only there for a year. I would sing along, but no idea what the tune was. Great memories, really interesting. p.s. I actually love the words of the school song, very inspirational actually.

Now for the lady with the robes, was she not the Head Mistress Miss Livingston thin grey hair in a bun that would get loose lady (she was very enthusiastic in her classes as I remember and she wore those old fashioned shoes you described thumped around in them and woolen straight skirts, I do recall that she taught English and speech which she said I was brilliant at. LOL Do you remember Twiggy (science) and my favourite Mr Archie Fraser (dreamboat) and I think my first, real crush, he taught art in the new building there was a whole gang of them over there who hung out together. I can see the faces but have no clue any more to the rest of the names. Lesley Do you find this valuable? |

She was an older woman, but the Miss McEwan I'm thinking of was smaller in stature, quite slim and (difficult to judge her age) and probably mid to late 40's. If they ever do manage to get sound on this site, perhaps we could do a duet and sing our old school song. My memory isn't what it used to be and like you I can see faces and outfits etc., but as to the names of all these teachers - they've just vanaished from me. Do you find this valuable? |

Margaret absolutley right...Lindsey... I actually have never forgotten her name... just had a temporary amnesia moment last night, (oops) while doing my usual 10 things at a time.. feeding all my furry ones, one of which (little annie) who is almost 19 who recently went blind.. and I pay very special attention to..I gave a speech (spoke of this once before) in her class and to this day, I recall the entire thing... of course it began with "Miss Lindsey and class.." she was so taken with it that she marched me around the entire faculty and I had to then repeat it over and over. Since, I think she thought I was her star pupil... I had to begin the series near the start of the term ..and since I was put on the spot..first.. I felt it had to be really good. Did it with a lot of humor..and a pan face.. it was called "How to find a husband"..and thus, ripe for fun and merriment...at a time. I was a little bit nervous about it.. as I did not realise..that Ms Lindsay had a great sense on humor..but, after that speech..I could do no wrong in her class. Appreciate the correction..pal o' mine. Lesley Do you find this valuable? |
