Easy the Peasie
Dec 21 2007, 7:12 PM EST as a kid i loved to go to petershill park, rain shine,or snow.i loved the maroon and white strip.on home games i remember getting lifted over the turnstiles, and the older men would let us stand down front. To the left of the stands and out on the track would be wheelchair bound war veterans, and the st. johns ambulance men would walk around the track at half-time with a stretched out white sheet to collect odd change, pennies and the likes.i also remember at half-time,standing in line for bovril, pies and sausage rolls they were a real treat.i watched them all through the 50s.i can still remember the teams players names,stewart,mc.nellis,mc.nab,hamilton,shaw,murray,dolan,white,bishop,mc.clean.clark.After the game,i would go up to my Uncle Tommys at 111 Petershill rd. and bum the bus fare back to Balornock, being as i had spent my pocket money on ginger and sweeties.Great memories.I like this site, what with old photographs and all,i knew most of the pictures, brick by brick, thanks again. 8 out of 8 found this valuable. Dec 21 2007, 8:15 PM EST Hi Wellfield.. Many thanks for your contributions. It is early days for the site but i am confident it grow through time and obviously recall even more memories. Its interesting you remember Petershill. I lived in Gourlay Street, and I recall visiting Ashfield's i think black ash pitch...Later I moved to the top of the two high rise flats in Edgefauld Road. From the kitchen window you could see into Petershill Park. I went to anumber of games(there is a reference to one of them in the Tell Your Story (Stephen) bit on the Navigation pane. I do remember they had a balding left back called Neelie McGowan this was early seventies.. I had an aunt and Uncle who lived in Bedlay Street..he used to go to the games then the Petershill Club on Saturday nights...great times 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jan 1 2008, 4:21 PM EST Hi NelHal,Welcome to the site, and the 6 degrees of seperation. My brother Tenscot told me he had shared with you regarding my fathers years on the Clyde Training Ship EMPRESS,I just pulled out his discharge certificate,August 9, 1918,so he was on it quite a few years. It says on it .Established for the Education of Children of poor parentage, not a Reformatory,Therefore no Criminals are Admitted,or Retained. He was 16 when he finished. There was a lot of contraversy over their treatment in later years, these lads were 11 or 12 ,when they first boarded this fully rigged ex Royal Navy Battleship,I think her home port was Ardrossan. Also thanks for his stuff on Ellis Island, when he landed on his first trip to America. I believe he told me he jumped ship in Monte Vidieo, and Buenos Aires. He was a tough wee Glasgow man at 5 feet 2 inches tall,He and his other Brothers, excluding your Fine Grandfather, ende up being the big bookies in Springburn,Cowlairs Road. And your Grandads sister,Ruby Gallaher lived up the close at 58 Cowlairs Road.I also remember youre Mums Brothers were one of the first to turn regular push bikes in to dirt track speedway type bikes, they left oval dirt tracks everywhere they went,it was a dead giveaway where they had been. Thanks again Lad for the information,Say hi to all the family, Regards,Campbell Tuck 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Jan 2 2008, 9:27 AM EST I went only once to a soccer game at Petershill Park with my father. That was enough for me. Hate watching soccer or football, whatever. I had almost close-ties with the Petershill Social club as my father held a few positions within it. I only went once to a dance at Ashfield where it was OK but I just wanted to get away from all those relatives! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Mar 11 2008, 7:56 PM EDT Hey jmac49,no matter what generation you were brought up in,there's always things that stay with you, especially that mention of you dad,I can relate tae that! When my son was growing up,he played in U.S. soccer as a youth, they had the opportunity to go to the UK to play local teams in Scotland,England and Wales, but I had to laugh when he was afraid to tell me,that the worst place they played was Glasgow(the cheek o' him eh')but he didn't want to hurt ma feelings,he said the wee Glasgow boys,as he called them, did nothing but cuss' and foul them,ah' just laughed under ma breath and said,Oh' Really!!---anyhoo,Thanks again.
