When I was young, I attended the Sighthill Church for Sunday School as it was quite near the end of my Street . In 1951 when I was almost 10, I was given a Holy Bible from Minister Willam Heron from Sighthill Church in memory of my father William who died in 1942 ( I was only one year old when he died) . He dated it 22nd February 1951 with the Verse John 5:39 to look up. I still have this Bible in my possession to-day.

Has anyone got a photo of the old railway mission? It was only a steel framed church, but people held weddings, dances, and gospel hall services.I was told that the railway workers built the hall themselfs, but I do not know if this is true or not.It was at the bottom of the blocks near Coalgrain terrace.

I hope I'm reporting in the right spot. New to your site so you'll have to forgive me. We used to sing a song while playing doubles in the back close. I don't think it's politically correct but it was what we used to sing. Archie ball, ball, ball, the king of the Jews, Jews, Jews, bought his wife, wife, wife a pair of shoe, shoes, shoes. When the shoes, shoes, shoes began to wear, wear, wear. Archie ball, ball, ball began to swear, swear, swear. When the swear, swear, swear began to stop, stop, stop. Archie Ball, Ball, Ball he bought a shop, shop, shop. When the shop, shop, shop began to sell, sell, sell. Archie ball, ball, ball bought a bell, bell, bell. When the bell, bell, bell began to ring, ring, ring Archie Ball, Ball, Ball began to sing, sing, sing. THEN WE STARTED ALL OVER AGAIN.

I lost the first message, so here I go again:.
In times past people used to like visitng cemeteries, and not just the gravesites of their relatives. As children, we'd walk from Balornock all the way to Sighthill cemetery, visit my relatives graves, and do a little vandalism by nicking flowers from other graves to put my father and young sisters. I then grew up! This little verse brings it home that we are visitng the City of the Dead (as in the Necropolis, too, behind the Royal Infirmary and cathedral.), and though we may talk to those who've gone ahead of us and not get an answer, they do sometimes talk back to us through such as genealogy research, a major hobby of mine for over 60 years now. I can visualise the conditions under which some of my mother's relatives from Belfast lived and who ended up in the City Poorhouse, Parliamentary Rd., before Barnhill/Foresthall. Springburn was built. If some of you still visit Sighthill, just for a Sunday "donner" think of this wee poem: I know! I sound like a dinosaur for who nowadays just visits a cemetery for the heck of it! Maisie DEAR ANCESTOR: Your tombstone stands among the rest; Neglected and alone. The name and date are chiseled out On polished marble stone. It reaches out to all who care It is to late to mourn. You did not know that I exist You died and I was born Yet each of us are cells of you In flesh, in blood, and bone. Our blood contracts and beats a pulse Entirely not our own. Dear Ancestor, the place you filled One hundred years ago Spreads out among the ones you left Who would have loved you so. I wonder if you lived and loved, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find the spot, And come to visit you. Author Unknown

I have just had a look at the lovely photos of Springburn Park and it brought back great memories of when I would go there with my pals in the summer. We usually went on the boats, had a shot on the swings, played putting, tried playing tennis but was never very good at it, went into the hot house and into the Rockery. I was there again this summer with my grandson and everything just seemed so bare. A lady said to us not to go near the boating pond as there was usually men sitting drinking beer there and the dogs that they had with them were quite fierce and this was at 11.30 in the morning. Such a change from the 1950's.

We stayed on Gourly Street across from the bowling green. We went to the princes when we were really young. My mother had to come and dig us out with the help from the ushers flashlight on us. We
had staying in for a repeat performance. We were in disgrace with my mother slaping our heads off as we walked up the isle. We used the Princes to meet boys when we were teenagers. Does anyone know Shug O'Neill he had bright red hair and was very cute. Talking like this has brought back lots of memories. |

Jim, your stories get better and better - you should write a book! I remember most of the things you write about, and we must have been at Albert at the same time as I also went in 1949 Thanks for the memories!! Margaret.
