hillkirk street

i was born in 30 hillkirk street on 25/3/44 and my earliest memories were attending the gospel hall and seeing the lantern slides, the marvelous smell of the freshly baked rolls coming from torrances bakery.going to the a.b.c.minors on a saturday morning at the princes pictures in gourlay street.my early years at elmvale school, good to see that it is still standing as not much more remains of old springburn.we were a family of four staying in a single apartment with outside toilet shared with neighbours.very happy days indeed. i stayed in the red sandstone building right next to the church.if my memory is correct i think that there were three closes no.22 , 26 and 30.i can also remember the wash house in the back court where my mother had to light a fire to heat the water in the big tub to wash the clothes.[no washing machines in those days] playing in the swing park opposite balgrayhill rd.i think nearly all the kids from springburn played there.i also have great memories of going to play in springburn park, fishing net and jam jar in hand to fish the boating pond. i can also remember that staying next to the church had its advantages as there were a lot of weddings, and taking part in the scramble, shouting "hard up,hard up"and the groom or best man would then throw handfulls of coins into the street leading to a stampede to try and get a few coppers, what a battle!another memory i have is following the salvation army band on a sunday evening marching up springburn road to the hall in wellfield st. i can also remember the locomotives on the pickfords lorry coming up vulcan st and slowly turning into springburn road on its very slow journey to the docks to be shipped somewhere overseas.

I left Springburn when I was 10 in 1954 never been back and now beginning to remember it more as often when I go to sleep keep seeing myself as a kid walking along in the sun at the top of Hillkirk st and looking at a bowling green? missing the place after 54 years, so started looking on the internet and now I find its no longer the way it, was Then I found your website, wow thanks to the pics of the way it was I am remembering more , and reading the name Raymond Carrol was really something as it seemed to pull a forgotten memory up from the depths of my mind, I know the name but can only get fleeting glimpses of the face, anyway am writing this in the hope that someone can help me remember .My name is Richard Purcell and I lived in Springburn from the time I was 4 til 10, my mother had a sweetshop about 3/4 of the way up the street on the right coming up the hill just after a church and almost opposite a nurses home (think it was a nurses home) further along from the nurses home was a lane which led to a big posh house where a church organist lived with his family he had a son called Alfred and we used to play cowboys an indians sometimes, in his big garden but mainly I used to play out with other friends, past this led to the blocks where my grannie lived and I went sledgin on a metal tray down a grassy hill which used to ice over (had to watch u didnt smash into the fence at the bottom) with David Johnson and his little brother Jacky then there was Elenor Bar and she had a big brother called William and their Dad had a bus which we went camping to Inverary in, other things I remember slightly are a park with a pond where we tried to catch tiddlers an put them in jam jars the swimming baths and a speedway track .The gospel hall spellbound listening and watching the teacher put cut out biblical characters on a board with a back ground of biblical stories R.Purcell

Welcome to the site Billy, I have a photograph in on the School Site incase you havent found it , you will see yourself there. This is wonderful being able to reminisce our old life!! From Kay Street, these days you can look over right into Hillkirk Street, a bit scary. Its changed a lot too but the Chapel is still there and so doesnt look too different. Yes went to the Gospel Hall too and the Sunday school there, infact everybody around did go Im sure. Do you remember Raymond Carrol, wonder where he went, think he was born near you. I remember the wee shop on the Corner of Hillkirk Place and Hillkirk St. where I bought an ice lolly and it stuck to my lips ...i got such a fright I was screaming all the way home, I lost the skin off my lips and my mum went away round to complain. Ha Ha. Happy Days indeed.
