RE: Springburn Pubs : Help Please
"#1 Would that be Bell's next to the Victoria-------I'm trying to think if there was a pub at Blenheim St, maybe Bunty or Beryl might know (just in passing Ladies!)" I cannot recall a pub in Blenheim Street besides Santis which we lived directly above. The only one I can remember was near the top of Vulcan Street.on Springburn road, which my Grandpa and most of Hydepark frequented. As ladies were not allowed in public bars and few, if any had separate little lounges, It would have been unseemly for ladies to even admit such places existed since they were an all male domain. Mind you, I do seem to remember going to a counter reached by a special discreet door, where people could buy a "cairry oot" or, as one of our learned ex-pats confided, old beer and ale bottles could be returned and exchanged for money. Every night grandpa would have a sort of round, small flagon of an amber coloured liquid by his bed, which he called his "medicine" and which reeked of whisky courtesy Mr Johnnie Walker. One morning, I tiptoed into his bedroom, took the flagon and emptied its contents down the (black) sink. I refilled it with cold tea. Mind you, I would be about eight at the time. I will never forget Grandpa's reaction. " Ma wee hen, grandpa is now going to have his medicine, " he explained, as I watched with fascination as he put the bottle to his lips and drank, and then let out such a yell of torture that my Mother rushed through. I could not stop laughing. But since I was grandpa's best wee lassie, I was soon forgiven. But banned thereafter for entering his room uninvented. I can still smell the scent of his clay pipe as we speak and the caress of his calloused, hard working, coal engraved hand on my head as I sat at his feet basking before the blazing fire, listening to his great stories. Grandfathers were old men then. Unlike ever youthful Wellfield & co.. So I would have to agree with Bunty and say we could obviously remember the chippie but were actually not interested in the demon drink . (Better quickly add... then!).

RE: Message board
"Never seen a message board with so many missing parts. "view, edit, modify, delete". have we got tae put a shilling in the meter tae. haha" Im afraid the message board is really an add on to the main function which is the website. Clearly it is not as flexible but you should be able to delete your responses to a thread...i dont understand that.. If you make a mistake..copy all the text in your reply, then delete the reply, open a new reply paste it back in, make the change and save. I did cover this at the beginning , if you look at the nav panel it is under ALL MEMBERS PLEASE READ. its not easy at first but you get used to it...it just takes a little time

RE: Location Of Sledger Hill
Hi - -Just to add a wee bit more on the subject -when I asked my older sister who lives in Saltcoats "where was the best hill to sledge on in Springburn "? -her answer " Sledgers Hill" at the "Blocks" for anyone who does not remember "The Blocks-" I think it was a facinating concept and one worth looking up the history of- My grandparents lived at Fernbank Pl ( which was formally Craigton Terrace) theirs was the second from the top-there was 6 rows of victorian terraces so as you can imagine the hill they were built on was a very steep cobbled hill & a paradise in the winter ! There was a newsagent/ shop at Colgrain Terrace .From my grandparents front window you could see for miles to the hills & industrial chimneys etc- if you went down on a sledge you would be almost at the janitors house at St Aloysius School corner of Fernbank & Elmvale Streets- there was at one time a Railway Mission Hall at the bottom of the hill on the right side - the allotments (plots) & terraces of the Blocks could be seen from the Swings right enough as Bunty mentioned- BUT I did think the tall building ( with chimney) left side of in the elusive photo looked like Elmvale School !! - at the other steep side of the houses was an access that was down the side looking onto Cowlairs works and sidings- and that descent came out at back end of Memel Street - mostly used by the workers who came off Cowlairs Road where the bridge was over the tracks I think Jim may recall that well used bridge -it was a great shortcut -I was born at Memel Street -the end that stopped at Hawthorn Street across from Patersons Dairy...So on that note so ends my ramble on " Sledgers Hill" I am off now to Shangri-La...........cheers

RE: Old friends
"Any news about May Wright who lived in Mingulay St Milton -married a guy called Proctor from Coatbridge and went to Canada.Rumour had it she returned to Scotland sometime late '60's early 70's.Tried FR site Albert school but no response so far. Also Joe Mc Farlane another Albert contemporary who lived in Menzies Road but disappeared in the '60's - again no luck from Friends Reunited. Any news even bad would be appreciated." As suggested by Wellfield it may be useful to add that Joe would have left Albert about 1957/8 and May in 1959/60.
