Harry, I have asked around, and there is not a separate policy for the Springburn Museum Collection that I can find. As part of the wider Glasgow Museums collections, it is treated with the same care and with the same importance as the others aspects/themes. The Springburn Collection was an invaluable tool in my research for some of the displays at the Riverside Museum and I am sure it will continue to be used for future displays both here and at other Glasgow Museum venues. One of the greatest assets we have here is that the collection is so wide and varied, that any venue could feature objects from the various collections. Here at Riverside we feature more than objects from the Transport and technology section. We have been able to include items from fine art, decorative art, natural history, geology, costumes and textiles. So in the future items from the Springburn collection could be used in various displays/ways in various locations. I should have mentioned the Open Museum in my last email to you. The Open Museum, based at the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre in Nitshill, is our outreach arm and aims to engage areas of the Glasgow community, to learn more about their stories, develop displays for local centres and to assist with the larger permanent displays in the venues. You can find out more on the Glasgow Museums webpage. You might also be interested in the Community Display area within the Kelvingrove Museum. It is located in the east wing (under the floating heads) and is a temporary exhibition space for groups from Glasgow. This could be an area that could feature a display using Spring Museum objects. The contact for this area is John-Paul Sumner, whose email is john-paul.sumner@glashowlife.org.uk. I am not sure of the current display schedule, but I know John-Paul is also interested in hearing more ideas for the space. You could also contact Fiona Hayes fiona.hayes@glasgowlife.org.uk , who is one of my fellow curators who looks after the Social History collections here. I hope this gives you a bit more of an understanding of how the Springburn Museum is being cared for and ways that it might be displayed or utilised in the future. Yours John John Messner Curator, Transport and Technology
Perhaps those of you who still live in or near Glasgow will be able to touch base with the contacts mentioned and hopefully find out when and where the artefacts from Springburn will be scheduled for display.
