Hi: I lived in Elmvale St., from 1946 until 1962 - at number 19 - the "new" side of the street - which I understand were built around 1936, and near the top, which started at 15, being after the Church of Scotland at the ocrner and the Youth Emploment Office.

Has anyone any photos of Elmvale St.? I can remember our house (ground floor) was opposite one of the three shops in the street - all on the other side . They were - after what was known as Maguire's Pub, though it had a change of name Jimmy's , Franks and Mary's. Mary's was the last shop in the street and at the end of the older tenement houses opposite us. The street was used as a terminus for the 37 and 46 buses as weel as the 4 and 16 trams, with occassional other routes using these temini from time to time.

My mother and father were Hugh and Elizabeth (Betty) Maguire. My father worked in Glasgow Corporation Transport and part time as a barman in Gilliland's Pub, off Parlimentary Rd, usually every second Saturday, due to shift work.
He was well known as a golfer who played regularly at Littlehill. He also played and won trophies for Snooker mostly with GCT.

I see there is a user on this service called Kesson, a fairly unusual name. My maternal grandmother (whom I never met) was Elizabeth Kesson and she was married to Geroge Nicol. George, I was told by my father just before he died, had been fairly active and incvolved in the early set up ofthe trades union at Sighthill. He told me that there was a small plaque or monument had been put up to him and several others who were similarly involved. I understand this was somewhere near or at the old Sighthill site.

I saw a picture of the Springburn Halls where I appeared on stage once with all my classmates from St. Aloysius Primary. We performed a rendition of Davy Crockett (1955, I think). I believe it was the only time that I was in these.

My usual haunts were the "Dogs Park" and the "Daisy Park"... does anyone remember these?

Springburn Park was a bit too organised, except on Saturdays when the lads from school used to organise games of football or when you had enough money to go on the boats in the main pond - or later when I think I was about 9, the double canoes. Sunday mornings were interesting when the "old men" used to launch their model boats on the boat pond as all the cnoes and boats were tied up and not used on a Sunday.

This is my second go! Don't know what I did wrong before! I lived in Carleston Street for the first 11 years of my life and like everyone else on this site, I am proud of my roots in Springburn. Everything about my time there sticks with me. We all move on to what we think are better things but are they? We were very poor of course, times were hard but we were all in the same boat and stuck together. I live in London and the street where I have been for the last 23 years is great but I think I know 3 neighbours and that's it! The friendships and general camaraderie is what we all miss I think. Hello to everyone! I'll be back. JimLog. (Jim Logan).
