When I was just a laddie wi' beasties in ma herr
My erse wis hingin' oot ma breeks but, och, I didnae care;
The streets o' Glesca were ma realm an' I ruled ev'rything;
The backcourts were a royal court and I their scruffy king.

See me, I'm Springburn born an' bred, I steyed quite near the Co.,
Abune the cludge in Vulcan Street where drunk men used tae go;
I mind the railway engines on great big Pickford's lorries
That lumbered up frae Hyde Park Works oan faur, exotic forays.

I mind the bramble bushes that near the railway grew,
In autumn I wad go doon there an' stap masel' right fu'
An' Santi's, oan the Springburn Road, they aye had bonnie chips:
Nae maitter how ye blew oan them ye aye goat roasted lips.

The baths, in Kay Street near the swings, was where I learned tae swim;
I used tae go there wi' the boays; then lassies juist were dim;
Ma school wis near yon hill, The Blocks, gey slipp'ry when it snowed
An', at the tap, a lang fitbrig' that led tae Cowlairs Road.

The Vulcan Baur, I mind it weel, my close wis right beside it;
It used tae drive my mammy mad although she tried tae hide it;
Ye see, the men cam' oot the pub, a' tanked up wi' the drink
An' urinated oan the stairs: it made an awfy stink!

But that wis mony years ago when I wis rough as emery;
The hoose I steyed in is lang gone an' Springburn's juist a mem'ry
An' noo I am a merrit man wi' weans tae ca' me 'daddy'
But sometimes I can clearly mind when I wis juist a laddie.

I lived in Vulcan Street when the pub at the corner was called MacMillans and the High walk Shoe Co. was a gents outfitters! We played with two balls on the walls at the back of Masseys, chalked on the pavements for peever,A great place for playing all sorts games.I would get teased ,"Oh you stay on the street with the gents lavvies!". I would retort. Ilive in the street with the Library at the bottom and theFountain at the top!" Mind you the lavvies were great for high tig.
