I visited Springburn Park on a visit home from Canada and cried at the devastation of the Rockery and the big greenhouse. Why do vandals get such a kick out of destroying beautiful things? I've never understood that. My family and I used to go for a Sunday walks to the park from Barcaple Street and I always loved the greenhouses and the rockery. I remember the gorgeous flowers and fragrance of the rhododrendrons. In the autumn we loved to play in the fallen leaves and even in winter when it snowed the whole family would take our sledge (that my father made, complete with steel runners) up to the flag pole and play till we couldn't feel our feet. So many memories.

Enjoyed very much the photos of Springburn Park. Brought back quite a few memories. The hothouses although we could go in the upstairs was always cordoned off. A great dare was to run down the lawn in front of the hothouse in between the rose beds without the parky catching you. The wee paddle boats on the boat pond must have been death traps. My sister and I got stuck in the middle of the pond and the only rescue encouragement we got was "row faster before the ducks get you" There used to be donkey rides near the bandstand . What a park you could spend the whole day there with your ginger bottle filled with water and your jam pieces.

What a wonderful place this was when I was young, the boating pond, where me and my brother went frequently, to fish for baggies,or go on the boats. Guess we were lucky our great uncleran the hire shed, Tommy Rennie. There was an old building near the tennis courts, which we were told was a museum and later an old folks home, and heres the interesting bit , there was a house next to it, and that was where my dad was born, John Paterson,of course you know the saying, when you left a door open, were you born in a park, well my dad could say yes i was. so have many connections to this park and was the place i spent many hours, whether fishing, boating, feeding the ducks, rolling my egg downhill from the flag pole, the highest part of Glasgow,or watching the guys sail thier power boats on Sundays,it was a braw place to be. finlay
