"Thanks. I was there from birth (1953) to 1959. I have very few memories of the place but I do recall playing in the middens and getting a right telling off for coming home covered in ash. I also ended up in the eye infirmary once after someone hit me in the eye with a stone and broke my NHS specs. Of the school itself - all I can recall is being allowed to take in a favorite book - must have been last day of a term. Somewhere near Adamswell Street was there a cobbler - working in a basement or similar. Can't see why I should remember that. I also went to a nearby Sunday school. I expect that will be gone too."

Hi again yes there was a cobbler at the springburn road end of adamswell st same side as us his name was willie howat used to love the smell of leather and glue in his shop.jim

"How right you are Bunty.....these children went to Elmvale and were called " the specials " and we never got talking to them. that i remember .....we just used to see them coming out the van and wed all "look"......... Yes glad to say things are much better today ."

I think the confusion surrounding what schooling went on and when it went on at the school in Carleston Street has been resolved on this site over the past year. However, until now, I was not aware of the "specials" classes at Elmvale.

When I moved from Kay Street to Edgefauld Road around 1947, our front window at 77 Edgefauld Road looked down at the Wellfield Church Hall (which was attached to the back of Wellfield Church). Between Edgefauld Road and the church hall was the "dinner school" for the wee Albert (to the left) and - to the right - was the back entrance to what used to be Murdoch's School. This entrance was right across the street from the entrance to Wellfield Church Hall. I clearly remember watching "specials" being delivered daily to Murdoch's school for a number of years.
