We used tae rent a wee room & kitchen in Rothesay every year. Ma mammy's brother and his faimily fae Auchentoshan Terrrace came doon for the weekend as well as her sister's an' their faimilies. Ma poor wee mammy spent the whole weekend shoppin', cookin ' an' runnin' efter folk........some holiday! It wiz jist a chynge o' sink fur her! Luckily it wiz a big room & kitchen wi' two 'hole-in-the-wa' beds in the kitchen, two double beds an' a bed settee in the big room, so it wiz a' men the room an' wummin in the kitchen.......3 weans tae a bed!
In the evenings, ma mammy, daddy, aunties, uncles, ma brother,ma cousins an' me walked alang the prom wi' oor new cardigans an' jumpers that ma mammy an' aunties goet us fae their menage at the wee knitwear shop (that ah cannae mind the name o') in Springburn Road :-)

Durin' the school summer holidays, we used tae walk fae Milton wi' oor pals tae Springburn Park, the summers a' seemed tae be warm an' sunny in these days. Sometimes we wur lucky enough tae huv 1d ur tuppence tae spend, so we stopped at this wee shoap an' booght some 4-a-penny sweeties before walking up tae the park, we disappeared fur the whole day, oor parents's never worried aboot us. No the name Bunty McKenzie doesn't ring any bells with me, not unless "Bunty" was a nickname.

Oh the suspenders and a button, my God that takes me back.
I was walking home from Colston to Petershill Road and half way home this bloke tapped me on the shoulder and said "do you know you've got a button in your stocking" it had come out and worked its way down the back of my leg.
I was so ashamed, all I could say was "aye I know"
I wouldn't have minded had it been a nice pearl button, but it was a bloody navy blue thing. ha ha

"Re Lizzie MacFarlane's shop on Springburn rd : I found this info in a book I have about Springburns Cinemas,Iguess there were more than we thought. There was an old Prince's built in1914 it 1000,then a new one built in Nov 1937.The last show was 27 july 1968,then there was another, before our time.In 1911 there was one called the ''Wee Electric""it was 341 Springburn rd,next door to Sam Hoey's Emporium,it said that the back courts were on the rooftops of the Cinema,it sat 500 people. In 1925 it changed it's name to the Royal,It closed in 1930.The entrance was then converted into Lizzie MacFarlanes fancy goods and domestic utensils shop,The auditorium became The Oxford Billiard Hall, entered via the close at 339.This was owned by Oscar Catini, whose Relatives had the fish and chip restaurant on the corner, later to become Andy Robert's bookie's,and then Prize Bingo. THEN! youv'e had your chips,The whole lot's a gonner."excellent work w/f!

The thread from Stevedr reminded me of the wee grocers called Miss McIntosh opposite the fire station and next door to McLeod's the hairdressers. My mother Retta worked there for years with Edith Wallace and Violet McDougall. They cooked the gammons in a big pot in the back shop and it was the best cooked gammon I ever tasted. I remember the row of glass topped biscuit boxes on the back wall. The sugar came in Blue Bags and the butter came in big lumps like butter never tastes today. Heady days!

Thanks for remembering the name. This was where everyone went to have a perm. I was treated to my perm for a birthday present.
Incredibly you sat in an individual curtained cubicle where your hair was actually connected to wires suspended from a device which worked by electricity and the far from aromatic perm solution put on your hair. No man would have dared cross the all female threshold. If you were nosey, you could evesdrop on the conversation next cubicle. However, when the juicy gossip occurred voices would be lowered accordingly. To the best of my knowledge nobody was ever electrocuted but for what it's worth, no way would I endure that again. Oh, and re suspenders. If the button did come off,. you could also use a halfpenny piece. |
