COWLAIRS ROAD IN 1865, see the old Cowlairs Station at the foot of Cowlairs Rd
Springburn was a German Target in WWII to destroy our Railway Industry.
Maybe I shouldn't be ON this site as it says here that I came from "Springvale" and there's no
Gourlay St or Flemington St.

This was the Lodge I belonged to as a kid
and I think it was L.O.L.101 hmmmm! memory fails me.J.R.

I would like to thank Marie for allowing us to scan the first set in this following sequence.
Although pubs are clearly the subject, the pictures contain important structural information
in relationto the layout of Springburn Road so I decided against posting these
at the ' famous pubs' section.

Some of these views continue the Jigsaw of Springburn Road as well as
enlightening us on the businesses of the period. Steve

To the left on the other side Bells pub.

This find was the most exciting find for me.
The classic view from the seventies of the old stairs leading
down to the library on the left and the Haven at the top.

The following shots by William Doig ARPS EF!AP are probably the best ever taken of the district. They are astonishing accounts of 50s society and look so fresh you could almost enter the scene.

And finally, these extraordinary shots remain obscure. We are trying to identify authors, unfortunatley
they came to me without notification.

At the intersection of Springburn Rd., Cowlairs Rd. and Vulcan St., which was called Springburn Cross, on the building of the Co-op. there was a clock and beside that clock , carved into the stonework, was the inscription "Springburn Cross".
In photographs of modern Springburn, showing the same location, the inscription seems to have been removed.
Does anyone know when and why it was removed?

I remember going to Kay Street baths with my pal Wullie Flint, On the desk was Mrs Flanigan, After a swim nip into the steamie to see ma maw Margaret Laurie and get money for a roll and fritter. Then over to woolies, go round the back and climb up the front of the rag-store and alang the roof onto the woolies roof, there was a store there where the sweets were stored. We would take a Mars bar each and leave, we never got caught.
One day we found a small ladeis gun and bullets so we took it to the polis station, after we got interviewed the the game was up no more freebies fae woolies.

I remember catching front wheel of my bike at exactly this spot. (I think I can just see the blood on the road).
A big polisman took me to the Royal and I had 3 stitches in my napper.

I was really happy to see a picture of the pub at the corner of Springburn Road and Auchentoshan Terrace. I remember my Ma telling me that her mother and my Auntie Mary used to clean that pub and another that the same guy owned. i think it was Clarke's? . I might be wrong, it's been so long, but that would have been in the 40s and very early 50s, My Granny MacDonald died in 56, when l was 4 years old, my auntie Mary, her married name was Moffat, her husband was a sign painter who worked in the Caley. they ended their days living in the Sighthill Flats, they moved there from Garnkirk Street.
Smiths Pub, l enjoyed a drink in there in the early to mid 70s.

I worked in the DHSS (pre Jobcentreplus :-) ) in Cowlairs Road from 1978-1983 and although I was only young then (born 1961) we used to go to the Haven after working mid week overtime. I even used to sometimes play dom inoes with the guys in work.

Other pubs we used to frequent were the Vulcan, Bauldy Bains and and the Highland Fling !
