I mainly remember the shops along Petershill Road, as I was too young to be allowed to wander about. The shops were very handy, located just across the road from Bedlay Street. There was a sweet/cigarette shop, next came a cobblers, there was a lovely wee drapers shop and then a fruit and veg shop owned by the Cameron family. I specifically remember this name as my uncle was engaged to the owners daughter. They also sold sweets and because of the connection this is where my brothers and I got our 'play-piece' from. There was also a bakers shop and no doubt others whom I just can't recall at all. At the corner of Petershill Road and Springburn Road there was a big ice-cream parlour called Vics. I believe you could sit in or take-away. I also remember Woolworths in Springburn Road, the Co-op, McNee's Chemist and will post some more when I ask my parents to refresh my memory.

I recall so many shops perhaps I would become a bore or a hogger of this thread jings nowI have mentioned the Grain which was situated on that strip of springburn rd near to the pawn shop & the post office & the marvellous icecream cafe was further along beside the number 37 bus stop there were stacks of stores on both sides, some i recall are as follows............on the opposite side there were 2 yello painted shops owned by same family called Camerons hardwares, then there was a wee shop in between them which was called Mcqueens where us weans got something out of the penny tray before school started,I believe the Donnelly family owned a funeral parlour on the side of a cameron shop as I always thought it strange that the massive contrasts of 2 yellow shops then this demure brown & black shop as I thought at the time untill there was funeral walks & cars leaving from it regularly there was also another funeral shop by Donnellys up facing the springburn train station too.I recallcurleys & maseys,Galbraiths came along facing them as did woolworths too so curleys & masseys were struggling to stay afloat back in the days wherein one would carry leather message bags to do shopping not a plastic bag in sight always paper tissue papers wrappings & string for hoseiry shop nearby to curleys think it was called Hoseys???[oops sorry made post too long try too shorten in future sorry folks it's a bad habit of mines.

I recall that there used to be 2 Santi's. The good one across from Selynn's and the bad one just along from the Boundary bar.
We would walk past the bad Santi's, up the hill to the good Santi's to get our black puddin suppers etc except if the good Santi's wis shut, then it was back to bad Santi's with heads lowered. Bad Santi's chips were wrapped in newspaper I recall, good Santi's were in a cardboard tray wrapped in white paper. Bad Santi's owner had a huge handlebar moustache. No idea if they were related. |

In the late 50's early 60's there was a bakers called "Cosh" on Springburn road opposite Blenheim Street. They made terrific cream buns and "melting moments" that did in fact just melt in your mouth. I remember being facinated at how they made the pie shells. The machine was in the front shop behind the counter and was like a printing press. The lady that worked there placed the dough on a slab and pulled a large lever down to form the shell. She then cut out the tops for the pies. I don't remember if they actually made the pies there or sold the shells to the butchers shops in Springburn.
