John Carrick Street

Hello to everyone on this site. I actually saw the advert for this site in my local newspaper The Cumbernauld News, as funnily enough I live in Cumbernauld. I am 43 years old and was born in 1964 but I remember my early life at the age of 6 when I lived in Springburn.

I lived in John Carrick Street, up a close, of course, with gas lamps to light the way and when you had to go outside to put your rubbish in the "midges" which were the bins. We would also play on the Dyke's which were the walls surrounding the bins, we had great fun playing amonst all the rubbish, can you imagine that going on today.
We lived in a room and kitchen, which looking back was pretty awful, I remember my brother's bed was in a recess and I was lucky enough to be under a window so I used to watch all the comings and goings on in the street from my bed at night while mum and dad were in the kitchen watching telly with the pully full of washing above their heads, as this was the way to get your washing dry in those days.

I went to Albert Primary, which unfortunately I don't remember too much about, but I remember meeting my brother at lunchtime and going to the chippy for a bag of chips and a pickled onion which cost us all of 10p can you imagine two packets of crisps for 10p, what a bargain. You could also buy a packet of Tudor crisps for 2 and a half pence. And after school we went to the wee shop at the bottom of our street where we would get the penny tray out and took so long to choose what we wanted, even though we only had a couple of pennies each.

I also remember going to the Swimming Baths in Springburn Main Street, which we loved, I don't even know if the Pool is still there, maybe someone could let me know. My favourite shop in Springburn Main Street was a little toy shop at the foot of the hill.

Well I will sign off just now I will have to ask my mum questions about our life in Springburn, but I know they were some of the best times of my life!!!

Hi I sent you a msg but in case you didn't get it, just to let you know that Kay Street baths shut a long time ago. I learned to swim there, OMG it was freezing cold and the chlorine really nipped your eyes. The worst bit was the attendents coming round to chase you out by pushing the wee strange western saloon type doors open. It was worth it for the roll and fritter afterwards out the chip shop that was also in Kay Street.
