I was born in Partick and lived for a time in Govan but was too young to remember much. After a nomadic period which took us to Omagh in N Ireland, then Dennistoun we finally settled in Barmulloch.I agree with much of what you say but we lived in one of the Blackburn houses 3 bedroom end of row and the coal bunker was built in under the staircase with outside access to it.We bought the house for my mother in the 80's and she still lives there.I also winched a lovely girl from Milton but lost her through my childish stupidity (that's another story) so for 4 years Milton didn't seem such a bad place to me.
Barmulloch had nowt for us as teenagers (still much the same) so that's why Springburn was so important - it had the cinemas, the cafe's and the Johnston Church.Money was tight so the cafe's were regular meeting places. The church had a very progressive wee minister (cannae mind his name but he used to play a trumpet! honest !)and he would organise a dance on Tuesday nights (provided we went to his bible class on Sunday nights)We prevailed on him to let us have one on a Sunday as well as there wasn't much to do otherwise.Unfortunately he had some old fuddy duddies who would rather we hung about the streets than enjoy ourselves in the church hall so it all ended.I don't know what happened to him but he did us a great favour at the time.Yep Springburn was a great place for us then.
I was in Barmulloch 2 weeks ago (Jan 2008) as my mother still lives there off Rye Road and there's been a new development of houses built where the college was.You can actually see them on the Multimap site Bunty told me about.
They named the development "College Lands" appropriately enough.
Those "steel"houses which we were told would be temporary when they were erected, are still there, many of them now privately owned and much improved inside and out by the residents.
I think the school you were referring to was probably on the corner of Scotsburn and Ryehill Rd.That's been knocked down and rebuilt further down Ryehill Road and the old site is now playing pitches.Have a look at the multimap.com site which has more up to date pictures than Google Earth and use the "birds eye "view to get a real sight of the area as it is now.Current occupants of the houses once much maligned tell me they are now very much sought after.
There's still no additional shops, just the ones down between Lamont Road and Northgate Road. Most people go to Asda at Robroyston or Tesco down at St Rollox.
