Famous Springburnians
Thank you for the opportunity of adding a couple of names and also for the various photographs and old films of Springburn. Gallons of tears of nostalgia have been flowing....Now back to the editor's comments.
As the site is getting a wee name for itself in the local media, I thought it might help if some of the more well-known and recognisable residents of the past were given a wee mention. Or just those who had some sort of connection with Springburn at some point by living, working or attending school in the area. If they are still around their contributions might even be possible if we can get hold of them.
Sportsmen/women, celebrities, politicians etc... add their names here and let's see if we can get in contact with some of them. No defamatory comments please regardless of what your thoughts may be on them....

As it happens I'm not only from Springburn myself (Bucksburn Road and Later Petershill Drive) but I know one of the McCluskey brothers (Ken) as a colleague.
When I read here that they were from Springburn I asked him about it. Only to be told that they WEREN'T from Springburn but from Bothwell! I also noted the comments about Billy Sloan and am fairly sure he lived in St Monance St at one point around the early 80's. You'd see him from time to time jogging (well more mincing really) around Springburn park in some gawd-awful garish shell suit thing. Surprised there's no mention of former Lager-lovely and former schoolmate of mine Karen Flynn. She went to St Catherines and Later All Saints. Then there's some bloke by the surname 'Martin' who's some sort of politician ;-) And Springburn has even produced the odd TV producer! (some say very odd!) . Although maybe that has more to do with infamous Springburnians! |

Ron was born in Springburn in 1940 and went to Albert Secondary School, where he excelled in sports, being Junior Sports Champion and later Football Captain. I attended Albert Primary, but only spent a short time at Albert Secondary school with Ron, as I left for Allen Glen's in 1952. I still continued to see Ron for a few years, as we played cricket together.
I remember him as an outstanding sportsman and very easy going, friendly person - the nearest thing to a "Jimmy Stewart" kind of guy that you could meet. It was obvious that he had a bright future. I left for Canada in 1965, but was not surprised to later learn of Ron's outstanding achievements in industry and public life. Ron was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1984. He was awarded the CBE in 1986 and a Knighthood in 1994. Sir Ron became Chief Executive of the Weir Group PLC in 1982 and Chairman in January 1999 - a company he joined as a graduate trainee in 1962. He also served as Deputy Chairman of Scottish Enterprise from 1992 to 1996 and is a former Director of Shell UK and Scottish Power PLC. In September 2001, following the merger of Bank of Scotland and Halifax, Sir Ron was appointed a Non-executive Director of HBOS PLC and in January 2003, he became Deputy Chairman of HBOS PLC. |

I'm sure Billy Sloan was from around the Galloway St area as he used to write pieces for the Springburn Times (around 1977 or so) and I'm sure I was told that Craig Ferguson (Bing Hitler) and Lynn Ferguson were from around there too.

Hello,
I'm in Canada. I met Heather Menzies, who played one of the children in The Sound of Music, the 2nd eldest daughter in the movie ( blond with pony tail) She was married to Hollywood actor Rober Urich. I had a small shop in the town close to their summer home. One day she brought her mother, sister and brother in to meet me. What a surpise when I found out her mother came from Springburn. |
