Easy the Peasie!
Please recall any experiences of Petershill Park or the famous old social club.
Thanks to Big Arturo for stirring these great memories.
Petershill Memories
Working in the Caley from the late 60s to mid 80’s, the Peasie were the local junior team we occasionally went to watch at Peasie Park.
There was a strong traditional link between Petershill Juniors and The Caley going back decades as it was next door to the railway workshops and many of the club committee members and social club members worked in the factory.
I remember in the early 70’s when it was decided that all British Rail coaches would be painted blue, we had gallons of surplus maroon paint which we used to paint some coaches with and there was only one place it could go ! I remember the whole stock of hundreds of gallons was sold for a nominal sum, probably a tenner, and the Peasie got enough stock of their club colour paint to touch up the stiles and terracing for the next 10 years.
The Caley works football tournament, held every year between the different trades within the factory, always had the final at Petershill Park and we had many a good night in the Peasie Club after the game (unless the electricians won who nobody liked) in which we did our bit to swell the club coffers by trying to drink the bar dry.
I remember guys like Russell Johnstone, Bob Mcdonald, Jackie Saunders, John Alexander who all worked in the Caley and were fanatical Peasie supporters. Local derbies were quite intense affairs,
particularly against Ashfield who were detested quite vehemently by the Petershill supporters and terracing set-to’s were not uncommon.
I don’t know the origin of the bad feeing and if it was religious or not as the ‘Hill had the nickname of the Wee Gers but wouldn’t have thought so as St Roch’s in Provanmill were the Celtic oriented club and they were not held with as much disdain as Ashfield.
I see from the papers that Petershill Park (apparently the highest junior park in Scotland elevation-wise) has been demolished and rebuilt, using what was left of Paddy Orr’s park, the grassy area behind the stadium which ran over towards Flemington Street.
Good to see The Peasie are still going strong and remain a major force in junior football.

Watch
as a kid i loved to go to petershill park, rain shine,or snow.i loved the maroon and white strip.on home games i remember getting lifted over the turnstiles, and the older men would let us stand down front. To the left of the stands and out on the track would be wheelchair bound war veterans, and the st. johns ambulance men would walk around the track at half-time with a stretched out white sheet to collect odd change, pennies and the likes.i also remember at half-time,standing in line for bovril, pies and sausage rolls they were a real treat.i watched them all through the 50s.i can still remember the teams players names,stewart,mc.nellis,mc.nab,hamilton,shaw,murray,dolan,white,bishop,mc.clean.clark.After the game,i would go up to my Uncle Tommys at 111 Petershill rd. and bum the bus fare back to Balornock, being as i had spent my pocket money on ginger and sweeties.Great memories.I like this site, what with old photographs and all,i knew most of the pictures, brick by brick, thanks again.
