Having read these threads it appears there are diverse reasons for low acdemic standards some of which I would agree apply to my own time at school. However, having arrived at Wellfield Primary via 4 other primaries 2 in Northern Ireland, the others in Glasgow I was ready for 11+ aka the "quali" at 10.For some reason I was not entered for it and ended up repeating a year I had already done at Alexandra Parade Primary.I then went to Albert Sen Sec and found the first 3 years relatively easy. After that it was a disaster.Teachers whose idea of imparting knowledge was to trot out notes, and dish out homework with little or no guidance as to how it should be actioned, followed by "careers officers"who imparted even less advice soon disincentivised me to he point where I wished I'd left at 15.
Despite this I managed to get through life, never being unemployed and bringing up 3 children with much asistance from a good wife. That said,I do worry what is in store for my grandhildren if only half of what we read in Newspapers and in reports lik this one is true. |
