Can`t remember this cinema ever being called the Springburn cinema. First went there in the early 1930`s. It was always known as "the Wellfield" until it was changed to "the Astor"
The penny matinees were our usual fare with Tom Mix,Rin Tin Tin and The Invisible Man being some of our favourites.

"Thank you for this little bit of history norrie. I live on Broomfield Rd from 1943-1951 and went to films at the film house at the bottom of Wellfield St. I don't remember the name of the film house--but I do remember how I got there. Someone can correct me here but there was a long row of tenement houses on the left going down the hill as you approach the film house from Broomknows Rd. I can remember the brick walls in front of each of the closes entering into the tenements. As I remember it there was a large open space on the other side of Wellfield St. There was also a large open space betwween the end of the tenement row and the film house. I used to go to the films with my brother, cousins and local friends for bthe Saturday matrinees. At first we used to queue up to get in, and once in a while we figured out how to jump the queue. In my day the usher controlled where you sat starting at the front row and filling the seats row by row towards the back. If you came into the picture a little--or a lot late--largely due to the long queue you entered a pitch black picture house---you needed an usher with a torch. On one occasion was admitted late--say half way through the film---but at the end of the film I and all like me in the rows of seats in front of me were ushered out--to make room for the next cohort of viewers. My next memory is of when we changed our strategy and decided to pay the extra thrupence and go through a different door to get to the balcony. what a luxury. Let's say there were seven of us and we had the whole balcony to ourselves. Naturally we did not sit beside each other --- we spread out. I'm over the limit--more in the next narrative. After seeing the film we would " Correction to the quote " ---there was a long row of tenement houses on the left going down the hill as you approach the film house from Broomknows Rd." The tenement houses were on the right side of the road"

I think old springburn is not just gone it was wiped out. It was done deliberately and I dont even like to go near it now. The heart and soul of old springburn is missing, the engineering is missing the shopping area is so poor it is a hurting experience now. Springburn needs to start again because the planners destroyed it. Even the lovely parks are gone of a mess. I spent my childhood there and my parents Tommy and Margaret Laurie were brought up there my dad served his time in Cowlairs now gone and worked most of his days in the St. Rollox, Maggie Thatcher sorted that out so whats left except memories. It was once a nice place full of decent working people.

Update on Weather.... here in the heart of Texas...... Yesterday we were at 85 degrees.... last night around 4/5 pm... USA Central time... the wind picked up... I was out...and felt the sudden change.... by about 6 pm..the rain began...turned to sleet and ice.. solid ice on the decks..by..11pm... woke up at 4:00 am.... with all decks covered with snow...... ice/snow..nasty combination.... slippery... and unusual here in the "Hill Country".... saw snow only one other time...but, we were iced in...for 5 days..two years ago... but, that was in January..... today...in the 50's...blue sky... pretty...and the snow is finally melting....... very weird for this time of year...

"Love to see that wee Springburn snow tribute..my imagination is running wild... at what it might be.. but, it's hard to imagine minus 4 degrees..even there... that is really cold..brrr I am curious though...and "ah canny figure it oot" why insurance premiums might increase...when the weather gets cold...unless you mean that the snow on the roads might cause more traffic accidents.. ? Love that last phrase...hidnae heard that in a lang while....! thanks jmac49 .. still laughing.... Lesley" lesley what i meant about the insurance premiums is the south of england is never ready for any type of adverse weather ,if it rains or freezes they always get caught out and its usually the first thing on the national news.with the recent cold spell just think of the amount of burst pipes (plumber heaven) car bumps and more serious accidents that can happen hence the insurance gag .they,re just not made of the right stuff .better cross my fingers and everything else that my pipes are ok .its snowing again and to get heavier through the night so that wee snow tribute might just appear here soon

If anybody's interested try the link from the Navigation panel or alternatively;- www.my-cause.com/cause/springburns_heritage Kevcoll's recent postings are encouraging regarding plans for the Public Halls but maybe we can influence those powers that be to do more and save the Winter Gardens too. They have sat on their hands for far too long.Let's show them that even though we had to leave we still care.

Yes Frank that was our Father, at the corner and he`d pass the money in the window and we`d sey it on the sideboard in stacks. thrupenny bits tanners shilling etc. I done my runner and took the lines down to Cowlairs road office. It was good wages for a schoolboy. Half a crown for one meeting an five bob for two meetings as races were every fifteen minutes. I`m two yrs older than your brother.

Swedish houses whopping real estate prices

To those of us who used to live in the Swedish houses "up near" Stobhill hospital, maybe it's time to get into real estate!
Just for the fun of it, I went to Google and typed in Eastburn Rd. real estate and found a house at 54 Eastburn Rd. advertised for sale at 120,000 pounds sterling. At today's $ r.o.e of about $1.66 to the pound, this means that this Swedish timber house is being advertised for sale for about $199,200!
The Swedish timber houses are now over sixty years old and seemingly are appreciating in value rather than depreciating as they get older, at least judging from this price..
The living room in this two-in-a-block house looks a lot bigger than ours at #16, but even though ours had a sort of bay window, it was no smaller than the two in the block design. Great that photography can trick our minds into seeing something different from what we remember.
Anyway, if some of you living abroad want to own a "Swedish timber summer house" in Balornock, there's one up for sale.
