I was born inSpringburn in 1944, and educated at Wellfield School and thereafter Albert. Served an apprenticeship as an electrician with a small company located at the top of Atlas Street. Taught Electrical Installation Work at Falkirk College for seven years before deciding that if I wanted to teach then I should teach a subject I was really interested in. Went to Stathclyde Univ. and left with a degree in Economic History. Later gained M.Phil.from Glasgow Caley.Taught for the next thirty years in Further Education. Spent the first 24years of my life in Springburn and have nothing but happy memories of the place. Played football for the school and at a later date the 200th B.B. and Cowlairs Parish U19s in the Churches' Youth League. Please add any details you may wish to share .

Hello Kenboy - just read your post on Avonspark Street. Pleased to find you're one of the MCNeillys. If you should be in in touch with Hugh please give him my best wishes. My name in those days was Dorothy Carr and I was also at Albert in ML classes.

Any of our members born in the 1940's or earlier recognise themselves or friends in the photograph I have just posted of the childrens theatre group sometime in the 1950's? Photograph taken from the Evening Times.

Last Saturday I popped up to Glasgow to see Petershill playing. Arrived in Springburn early and decided to take a wee tour. Starting at what we referred to as the High Road I was most impressed with both the old and new build flats as with the blonde tenements in Springburn Rd. Not to be outdone the red tenement buildingd around Ayr St. have never looked better and the new build houses also look pretty good standing in the shadows of the magnificent new Glasgow North College. Heading up Springburn Rd I pass the railway station which looks clean and tidy and soon reach the shopping centre. Enough said. Exiting the centre I walk along the old Wellfield St. and gaze up at the 1960's built high rise buildings both of which have recently benefited from new external rendering. They look good. One is aptly named Wellfield the other Newlands! Why not Croftbank, Orwell or Edgefauld? Walking up Croftbank St. I turn the corner and look into the bombsite which was once my old school Wellfield. I am sure I hear childrens laughter coming from both playgrounds. Memory is indeed a wonderful thing as I often heard the old Y.P.S.M. at the Salvation Army say. Heading down Edgefauld Rd, or the bus hill, I pass Young Ter. Eastcroft Ter. and Foyers Ter. and they are just as I recall. Reaching Avonspark St. I am compelled to walk the length of it and I am pleasantly surprised by what I find. The pre war buildings or four in the blocks look fine and the new houses at the Oatfield end of the Street are most attractive. Many of the gardens look well kept. Passing the gates of Foresthall the grounds have now given way to a fairly new housing estate and the flats on the other side of the road nestled around Barnhill Station are impressive as are those alongside the old Petershill Park. Forget the negatives of todays Springburn, scrape beneath the veneer and you will be pleasantly surprised. The Peasie won 3-0.

Yes Willie, I hope to meet up with Bob on my next visit to Springburn. He tells me he often has a walk through the park so hopefully we can do that before I nip down to watch the Peasie.

Hi Kenny, Your name is certainly familiar, but can't put a face to it. Yes Mary could be quite aloof somtimes, but she was a great friend. I never did work in McNees as I was a Book Binder in the print trade. I then did some cold selling jobs whe4n the kids were young, was then an Appeals Organiser for the PDSA for 11 years before I went into deliver training for the Employment Service through private sectors. Where did you live in your teenage years, were you anywhere near Scotsburn Road or were you further afield. Would be nice to speak to youu again. Regards Elizabeth x

Hi Elizabeth, Guess I must just have been speaking to you outside McNees. I stayed in Avonspark St. at that time moving to Cockmuir St. around 1964. I must say I never found Mary aloof but then at 15/16 I couldn't see any faults in her. Regards, Kenny
