My name is Bunty, maiden name of Culbard, I was born in December 1943 at 49 Queenshill Street in the very heart of Springburn. I have an older sister Joyce and a younger brother Jack. We moved to Barmulloch in 1953 to 94 Rye Road where I lived until I married in March 1964. I attended the Wee Albert, the Albert Annexe and then Albert Senior Secondary leaving there at the age of just turned 15 in December 1959 with absolutely no qualifications, (I gained these later for myself at the age of 38). I started work in Wm Collins the book publishers in Cathedral Street in January 1960. I also had a Saturday job in the Poly ( Lewiss' Polytechnic ) and also served pies and Bovril at the Ashfield Stadium from the converted railway wagon. At the age of 19 I met my husband Robert at the Locarno Ballroom in 1963 and we married 10 months later in March 1964 (no shotguns involved). My dad was the foreman plumber in McNeils in Northcroft Road and we were lucky enough through him to get a room and kitchen with an inside toilet at 558 Springburn Road, three stairsup, right opposite Kay Street. I had my first son in December 1964. We flitted, using a pram, to 538a Springburn Road, right above the Sports Shop (used to be Taylors the fruiters) at the corner of Northcroft Road. I had my second son in February 1968 and from there we moved all over the place for the next 15 years with Gibraltar in the mix. Finally ended up about 27 years ago at the bottom edge of England near Portsmouth.

Hi Buny gal, thanks for the message. I also lived in Springburn many years ago now, never been seem to be able to get back, not that there is a lot left. It seems, that the Springburn folk travel all over the world, even as far as america...Aye it was a grand wee place, a paradise on earth, the likes of which we will never see again. I have been deeply molded by Springburn and I will never forget they way it used to be, or it's people. It is inevitable, but time changes things some for the good some for the destruction of beautiful things and in the case of Springburn it was not good. But lives go on and memories linger, it is the values and memories which stay and guide us...
In the words of Henry David Thoreau.."I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived."

Hello Bunty. I also went to Big Albert and must have passed you on the corridors many a time but being older left in 1957. My dad used to send me up the road to Santis for fish/chips. I seem to remember it on Springburn Rd Across from Hillkirk st. My problem is, the namesc are all familiar but I only have a hazy recollection of where they are(were). I wonder if someone has an old map that can be uploaded. Gus

Hello Bunty, I've sent a message to Harry in reply to one he sent me. I know I've done something wrong because my reply appears on my own page instead of his. I wonder if I'll ever get the hang of this. Sorry to be a pain Betty
