Hello, my name is [Robert Parker]!

Born Stobhill 7th Sep 1944

Current residence - Bonnybridge

I discovered this excellent site from a golf chum at Crow Wood (Duncan Abernethy) and was pleased to view the school photograph, which has no year but is named “Moira Caird is 5th from right on 2nd row”. I am the boy to the extreme left in the second back row. I remember a lot of the faces but will require help with their names. Duncan is down the front with the girls (no change there then) and Jim Dickson (Dickson Tyres – Cumbernauld Village) is in the second back row 5th from the left.
I moved to Mingulay Street in Milton when I was about 9 and attended Elmvale School for a time whilst Miltonbank School was being built. I then went to Colston and on leaving school joined Fredk Braby & Co in Petershill Rd (Bobby Blades ?) to serve my time as a Draughtsman. During this time I attended night school three times a week at Petershill School and Stow College and obtained my O.N.C in Engineering.
From 13 to about 18 I was a member of Springurn Swimming Club and had a lot of fun at various Galas in the west of Scotland. Names from the swimming club that I remember are John Hamilton (who was “Best Man” at my wedding), Bert Kerrigan (now Queens Councillor), John Convery, Elsbeth and Margaret McCallum and last by no means least Helen Bain. I hope that Helen will excuse me from saying that we “stepped out” together for a short while and it was a pleasure to see her in the photographs of the re – union. She has not lost that cheeky smile.
Swimming career over I turned to football (Well, I was a goalkeeper actually) and signed for Milton Battlefield (near Kirkintilloch) then Kirkintilloch Rob Roy. Pollock Juniors, Dennistoun Waverly and Vale of Clyde. I also played a few games of “reserves” football for St Mirren, Third Lanark (giving my age away here), Stranraer and Glasgow Rangers but I had to stop playing due to a bad injury to my right knee.
I married Loretta in 1966 and we now live in Bonnybridge (and yes, I have seen one, but not in Bonnybridge, before you ask)
We have one son called Steven (40) and three grandkids Ben (9), Scott (6) and the love of my life Sarah (3) who live close to us at Stenhousemuir.
I retired from Business 8 years ago and spend a bit of time travelling (we have had a place in Spain for 20 years)
I play golf at Crow Wood with Duncan (as I mentioned) and another ex Colstonian Neil Sinclair.
I am also a member of Allandale Bowling Club and have been fortunate in picking up a few trophies, one of which was the 4 ball pairs, which was won with Duncan Piggott ex Colstonian. We decided to sing the school song to celebrate “Colston, Colston source of our pride” but could not remember the rest of it thankfully.
I achieved one of my ambitions recently when I met one of my heroes – Frank Kelly. He played Father Jack in the Father Ted series and knew our part of Glasgow
Well, that is about it – Almost my whole life on one bit of A4 paper – pretty sad – but I am still here to write about it.

Cheers

Robert
p.s. Does that chippie at the end of Kay Street still sell fritters ?
