Birthday (25 June 1941): Current residence: Brisbane, Australia
Please add any details you may wish to share . My name is Wilma McCarter (nee Miller) I was born in Stobhill Hospital, lived at 70 Galloway Street until I was nearly five, from there I was taken to live with my grandparents from the age of 5 years to 15 years in Adamswell Street (No 182). Went to Hydepark Primary 1946- 1953 then to Albert Senior Secondary from 53-56. We then moved to Easterhouse where I started working in a building company in Blythswood Square, also hostessed in Cinemas for a while for extra money. Met and married my husband Jack in 1962 and after having two children we decided to emigrate to Australia in 1965. When my children, 3 sons and 1 daughter all commenced school, I started work at a Special School (for Slow Learning Children) as Admin Officer. I was there for 26 years until I retired, I am now a housewife , my husband is a builder and works very hard, mostly renovations these days. I have nine grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, I also have a very loving dog (a spaniel) called Robbie and a cat called Harley but have just very recently lost my older dog (a border collie) who would have been 12 next month. I love animals.

I remember having a few pals around the place about 6 or 8 sitting on the bottom of the stairs in the ground floor singing and doing little skits like we were all actors and actresses, we had a marvellous time singing and dancing and we had a great time together, I must admit we thought we (as Springburnians) were very artistic in our own way. (Not sure about how the people in the ground floor of the Close thought though. We had a great time though.

Yes, these concerts were great. We would put up an old curtain and danced out from behind singing "Here we are again, happy as can be, all good friends and jolly good company'! Our refreshments at end of concert was sugerauly water (Not sure of spelling but it was hard licorice mixed with wattr in a lemonade bottle!!)

My favourite sweeties were dolly mixtures, because there seemed to be lots for your money. My other favourite was the little stick of strong liquorice and sherbet Yum......I used to love that, what about your favourite sweeties.

I remember going to the Baths at least once a week with our school, then I enjoyed it so much I would go another day by myself, I remember learning to swim with a bladder of a football holding on with one arm and swimming with the other arm......Goodness knows what I would have done if it deflated as I used to go right up to the deep end, no fear.... I used to go after school, follow a boy down that way that I liked, his name was Billy Hay from another class in Albert Senior Secondary but he never gave me a look as I was very shy and withdrawn in these days.....I loved swimming, perhaps because I was born in the month of June and the Star Sign for that particular month is Cancer the crab!! Any memories of you at the Kay Street Baths!!

"I went to Kay street swimming with my brothers often but also went with Elmvake primary school for a short time [before we got redirected to Colstons pool]and always resented the fact we couldn't stop to buy a spam fritter or a roll n chips afterwards because we were there oficialy with school .Oh how I loved doing that after a personal visit to the baths,my brothers & I would enjoy a spam fritter or rolln chips after the swimming then go to springburn rds swingpark next to Kay street..I recall the baths got shut one time due to there being a live rat swimming around in the water in the late 60s anyone recall that?"
Linda, I am glad I wasn't in that water in the late 60's, you would have probably seen most swimmers walk on water that day if that rat was swimming in there ha! ha!

Anyone remember the Palais Dancing, shoogling around the floor (I mean flair).....oh! didn't we think we were all just smashing with our stilletto heals and big skirts with the flairy underskirts undeneath....now thats taking me back a while! My cousin and I used to go at least twice a week after work, we would rush home have something to eat then put our curlers in and wrap a scarf around our heads and catch the bus to the Dennistoun Palais and spend about a half hour (or more) doing up our faces and hair. I have fond memories of that Dance Hall as thats where I met my husband, we used to frequent the Locarno also, but the Palais was our favourite.
