We just had a non-Christmas as my husband came down with a bad cold and we had to tell the weans and their weans and their weans to stay home. Bad enough, but I bought out the supermarket so what to do with all the food when there's only the two of us?. Not a holly, jolly Christmas this year. I'll get over it, but not the memory of how I was taken advantage of one Christmas 55 years ago when I was a wee office lassie of 14.
Everyone I knew was out ot work at 14 and any pittance we earned was handed over to our mothers. We'd be given our bus fare to go back and forth to work, and then a shilling or two pocketmoney for the pictures once a week. The women typists I worked beside lived in more "salubrious joints" than Springburn, and so they had a whip-round for this wee Balornock lassie. I was given a lovely leather tray purse with 5/-d, a huge fortune at the time. Off to Hoey's, to buy my mother a well-deserved wee present. This peroxided blonde woman was standing beside me with a baby in her arms and in a very friendly manner pointed to a lovely baby doll high up on a shelf, then off she went. I found what I wanted for my mother, reached into my pocket for the tray purse and 5/-d...Gone! I realised too late that she was likely a professional pickpocket and I an easy mark. I have never forgotten that non-Christmas for my mother 65 years ago. Hoey's and much of Springburn are all gone, but not in memory. If I've run this by everyone before, apologies. The lesson of the season is to have goodwill toward all men, but that dyed blonde woman obviously had only her own goodwill at heart. To all, I hope you had a blessed Christmas. May all of us experience just little ripples and no angry swells in the sea of life in 2010. (This "pome" could be worse as I send a full-page one at Christmas with many moans and groans from friends and family! No space here. You're lucky! ) Maisie |
